June 16, 2020 - Bevan never holds back, and some of his wines strike me as awkward, but this 2015 Wildfoote Vixen is a case where his style works well. The wine is a powerhouse, but one with finesse. Black with hints of purple, so opaque that when I tilted my glass I still couldn't see anything through even the thinnest layer of liquid. The nose is all creme-de-cassis and oaky spice, with a sweet but elusive note of lavender pastilles barely perceptible. Maybe I'll add chocolate mint to that list. Quite a complex nose. In the mouth, the sweetness of the ripe fruit is set off by a tart presentation and a soft glove of tannins; I'm visualizing those white gloves opera-goers wear... A bit hot, like a vintage port (and you could mistake it for one). Long finish.

This wine is quite integrated and supple and really ready for business right now. Don't hesitate (but it will hold for many years). People who love rich, almost thick wines, would give this more like 96 or 97 pts. But even if my score is a measly 93, I actually like it a lot.
