Community Tasting Note

  • NiagaraWino Does not like this wine: 73 points

November 10, 2020 - This wine came across as over the hill. Tannins and fruit gone. Tart. Drank with lime marmalade glazed roast pork tenderloin with parsnip and red onion. Not corked but from the comments received I believe the bottle was flawed.

11/10/20, 11:30 PM - This is definitely not over the hill. Maybe you had a bad bottle, maybe you don't like the style, which is fine. But this is the current release of this bottling and has still a very long life ahead.

11/11/20, 3:24 AM - Interesting. I love Rioja and purchased the bottle on the advice of a sommelier at the LCBO Spanish Shop. It was better with food but I didn’t finish the bottle. It’s headed for Sangria.

11/11/20, 8:25 AM - Sounds like it was corked or otherwise flawed. My bottles (in the US) have definitely been full of classy fruit and tannins that will take another decade to fully resolve. Perhaps take it back to the LCBO and ask for a replacement?

11/19/20, 7:57 PM - This was either a flawed bottle, or your palate isn't...there. Based off your reviews, it seems you only really drink Canadian wine. Perhaps consider that it may be you, not the wine--this is world class for the price. In which case, I may suggest you do not rate wines (at least international wines) numerically.

11/19/20, 8:28 PM - Chateau you don’t know me or what I drink. I assessed the bottle I had. What’s your interest in this?

  • Château de Farmer commented:

11/19/20, 8:50 PM - I suppose you’re correct, but I did have a quick check on your previous tasting notes before commenting. My interest is in helping people evaluate which wines to buy and what to expect from them—integrity in ratings, even if that is a somewhat silly concept on a crowdsourced platform. Based off the community ratings for this wine (and previous vintages of it), it seems like your review is out of line. That leads me to one of three conclusions: 1) flawed bottle; 2) taster palate not in line with international wines; 3) taster knows better than the world. Cheers.

11/20/20, 6:26 AM - Thank you for your clarification, Chateau. I spent some time in Rioja and buy Spanish wine often but that isn’t obvious from my notes as I am relatively new to Cellartracker. The Cubilla was highly recommended. I do not suggest I know better than the rest of the world so I accept that it must have been flawed. I only reported on my own and my wife’s impressions because we were both so disappointed. She introduced me to Spain and Spanish wine. Her nose and palate are probably better than mine but she agrees with my note on this bottle. The fact that I buy and consume a lot of Canadian wine ought not disqualify me from commenting on wines we taste. If you would like any suggestions on wine from Canada please let me know. Cheers!
