December 24, 2020 - Used Coravin to see where we are as part of this Corona Christmas... Reassuring to have good wine. Powerful yet refined, this Chateau Palmer 2000, whose colour is youthful still, for the nearly 20 year mark. The bouquet, rather regal, strikes a balance between burgeoning tertiary - hints of wet earth, touches of saddle leather, touches of truffle - and wet stone freshness along with the the bright red and black fruit and fresh white flower nature of youth. Oh there is tannic power too! Not yet all melted. Needs another 20 years for that. For those who like youthfulness, but with some cellar complexity, the 2000 is in a (very) sweet spot now. An enveloping palate but never overbearing or heavy. Indeed you get palate juiciness and density, smooth but with contours leading to a long finish that echoes forest freshness with bright lifting energy. The finish still has a somewhat foreboding aspect from pleasingly unresolved tannin. Superb!
