Community Tasting Note

  • AGELVIS Likes this wine: 92 points

April 22, 2021 - Thirty minutes in the glass before drinking. Very deep dark magenta color. Concentrated pomegranate, black olive, terra cotta, and cherry on the youthful, energetic nose. Smooth, very dry palate. Full, dusty tannins on the long finish.

This has terrific structure, but the nose was more red fruited than I like. This guy needs a little time to sort itself out.

4/25/21, 2:41 PM - Nice descriptors on this one, J......I probably over graded my bottle by a point. Some years this wine is a tad redder, but some years it seems a tad darker, too.

5/3/21, 9:39 PM - Oh Mark I like it a tad darker than a tad redder. We are talking just about the nose here? I hope. I had the Scarlett C.S. 13 which many people gave it high marks but indicated it had a redder quality to it. Maybe I am sensitive to the redder aspect in wine but the Scarlett tasted a little more like red fruit juice. Hope the same does not happen here. Dave

5/4/21, 4:35 AM - Dave, this isn't all that red. It's a dark wine and it's fruit moves across a spectrum with time. It can be a little red to very dark depending on age and airtime....and some years are def darker than others. '16 was a pretty dark cherry if I remember correctly. If you only like really, dark/black fruit stick with many of the LPV wines out there.

    5/4/21, 9:14 AM - Hey Mark,
I missed one important aspect describing my dislike in redder wines. Sweetness. Dave

  • Mark1npt commented:

5/4/21, 10:55 AM - Dave.......there's plenty of sweet Napa fruit out there in red, black and blue. The more extracted and viscous, the sweeter it comes across......

    5/4/21, 2:05 PM - Hey again Mark,
Thanks for that information. I really did not know that. Dave

    7/1/21, 5:26 AM - Hey Mark,
I forgot to ask how many years do I need to age this wine to really tone down the redder aspects. I was hopino to serve this to guests next year as my house red for experienced tasters. Hoping to serve Memento Mori, B Cellars, and VHR in 2023. That would be all 2018”s. What do you think? Dave.

Throwing a more private question under your name.

  • Mark1npt commented:

7/1/21, 5:36 AM - I think your logic is sound. All these wines might be doing well in '22 even. '23 should be even a safer bet. Some of the '18s seem to be starting to come around now at almost 3 years of age. I don't know if they'll shut down in 2 years in '23 or not? I don't know if some of them might not even be really drinkable til '23. It's a remarkable vintage that many wiemakers didn't seem to know how to handle. For this reason I think wines will be scattered all over the place as far as their drinking windows. Best to hang out here on CT and see what others are saying about each wine, I think.

    7/1/21, 8:03 AM - Hey Mark,
All my friends think it is sound logic-even my wife! Especially given the fact of my age. I do not like taking money out of a savings account but the fact I am replacing the funds makes total sense. Dave

7/1/21, 8:18 AM - Lol....do what you gotta do, Dave!

Just realized why they said go for it. More wine for them:). Davr

7/3/21, 6:21 AM - I am so confused by these 2018s!!! I sort of wish I hadn’t gone so deep. I think some but not all will end up excellent, and right now I have no idea which ones.

  • Mark1npt commented:

7/3/21, 8:20 AM - Nah Jen......you really had to have never made a wine before in you life to screw up the '18 vintage. I just think these ZTP's who use the same recipe or formula every single year to make their wines for their 47 different customers, manipulated things they never would have needed to manipulate in '18 and it threw off the natural evolution of the ferment and aging processes in the barrel and the bottle. I'm 'pretty sure' from what limited knowledge I have that the vast majority of these will be quite good. Last week I was convinced it would be 2 more years! Now come reports that some of the Carter '18s are performing, and the Lerner 18 yesterday was another great performer. These just aren't pnp's like the '16s were and it's throwing everyone off.

  • Decanting Queen commented:

7/3/21, 1:32 PM - I hope you are right. Some are tasting a little thin but I can be patient…

  • Mark1npt commented:

7/3/21, 3:36 PM - Jen, I only had 1 or 2 of the '18s at the Vine Vault tasting that were a little thin. The Lerner from the other night was not at all. I think we are going to be fine!!!

  • AGELVIS commented:

7/3/21, 6:49 PM - Jen - Join Mark and I in Austin on 12 AUG for Lerner and other Bevan made wines.

  • Decanting Queen commented:

7/4/21, 6:47 AM - Jaime I wish I could—I have to take S to LA for school around then…. My discovery of Lerner project was at a vine vault Atlanta tasting about 3 years ago…. I am going to try the Lerner project 18 in the next couple of days, I hope it is t too ‘young’ for me 😂

    7/30/21, 5:39 AM - Hi Mark,
Regarding “Jen, I only had 1 or 2 of the '18s at the Vine Vault tasting that were a little thin.”

Were the wines from the wine vault B Cellars. If so which ones? Dave

  • Mark1npt commented:

7/30/21, 4:52 PM - Dave, there were no BCellars at that Vine Vault tasting. Offhand I don't remember which ones they were.....

  • vintage1949 commented:

    7/31/21, 4:27 AM - Hi Mark,
Would you recommend for today a two hour decant for the 2018 Star? What about the 2015 RBS Schrader? Could I get away with PnP with the Schrader? Sure wish you could attend one of my wine dinners. Dave

  • Mark1npt commented:

7/31/21, 6:21 PM - Probably answering you too late but I'd say at least 2 hours for each wine, Dave. Maybe more. Sorry for the late answer.
