May 23, 2021 - Beats the Sociando Mallet by only a point or two in my book and only late down the stretch....I guess this is the 3rd days WOTN for me but only by a slim margin over the now well aired/decanted '11 SQN Patine Grenache.

4 hour decant and enjoyed over an additional 2-3 hours. Seems to hit another gear of smoothness and class at about the 6-7 hour decant time. For the first few hours I felt the Sociando Mallet outplayed this Cos. Slight barnyard funk on the nose that blew off after about an hour. Darker, more masculine fruit to start with. Stronger, more moderate drying tannins in the mouth, coating everything if you swirl for a while then swallow. Black currant dominant. Strong St. Estephe muscle. Goes though a phase at 4+ hours of increased acidity and tannins and alcohol...then by hour 6-7 this evolves into a thing of beauty. More graphite, more dark inky fruit and mushroom. It picks up weight and layers to the fruit. An aged and finely integrated, yet still going strong BDX......what a pleasure! Based on this bottle I don't see any stopping this wine in the next 10 years. I hope my last one of these is built the same. I'm gonna wait quite a while to try it.

5/24/21, 4:59 AM - Joel, thanks! This was quite the bottle, but it needed that last gear at around hour 7. Just amazing what is contained inside some of these bottles.....Mark

5/24/21, 10:49 AM - thanks for your review. Interesting. I thought 2003 was considered a down year for left bank. Guess this one holds up well!

5/24/21, 3:20 PM - Mark, I totally agree. RP nailed it & got chastised for it. He has been proven right (again).

5/24/21, 3:46 PM - Joel, anybody can taste and score wine, RP had the uncanny ability to be able to see 20 or 30 years into the future to what a wine could be. I have no idea how he did that.

5/24/21, 3:59 PM - Again agreed. I started following him in 1990 & he was amazing & why the world followed him. Now he is their punching bag....

5/24/21, 4:25 PM - It truly is a shame. He made many in Bdx, billionaires.
