August 24, 2021 - You know when you get sucked into one of those sales pitches from someone at the hotel of a resort and they are offering you the world? I think most of us know the feeling. You get fed all these lines about how great their program is, their customer service, their hospitality, their quality, their amazing location. Then, the presentation is over and someone, somehow is slipped into the picture without you knowing and now they are strongarming you into giving your credit card to commit to them for the rest of your life. Well, Macdonald is none of that! LOL. Alex didn’t need to tell us their wine is great. If he did, then it probably isn’t that great. Macdonald doesn’t need a sales pitch. They do not need an MS on the payroll or consulting. As Alex walked us through the vineyards, I felt the passion for what him and his brother are doing. I feel the pride in their hard work and their sacrifice. The wine business is brutal sometimes. But if you do things right as the Macdonalds have, you don’t need much more...well maybe you just need more wine! LOL. To be in the same category for me as the Harlans of the world and for them to do it in such a relatively short period of time is amazing. Granted, they are working with a site that is just flat out Grand Cru class. But, even the best site in the world can be F’d up. I remember reading or hearing a podcast where a winemaker said his job is not to F it up. Ok, enough of that…the 18’. Even at this stage, the wine has that “it” factor. When you couple their philosophy of winemaking, the story, and the passion of Alex and Graeme, you simply get perfection. I think this needs some time in bottle and like VHR for me, this wine is going to be a 3 digit wine with some time. This wine is so perfectly balanced. All other CT notes are spot on with the wine. I will note the very apparent black olive, savory notes to the wine which stuck out to me. Couple that with the beautiful blue and red fruits and you have wine of the vintage contender no doubt.

It's hard to walk away from the picnic table not becoming a super fans of Alex & Graeme. And, we must not forget the head trained old vines with acorns shoved in by woodpeckers. Just too damn cool. Glad you got to visit my man!
