December 28, 2021 - 2nd bottle from a half case bought a few months ago. I was never a fan of 1985 as a vintage (although it was considered excellent) and my notes are peppered with comments about the lack of tannins and excess sweetness. At the time the 82s were a similar price and far better. Double decanted and then drunk immediately. This bottle even better than the first. Base of neck level. Big nose of earthy, truffly sous bois at first which then reveals sea breeze and oyster shells, and finally clean blackcurrant and cedar. Beautifully balanced light to medium weight body with typical 1985 sweetness and good length. Just enough bitterness on the finish to offset the sweetness. A lovely moreish wine that I could (and may) sit here and drink the whole bottle myself without food!. Sublime Lafite like understatement; which is appropriate given Lafite was my favourite 85. Smoky aroma left in the empty glass. Glorious.
