December 31, 2021 - Upon opening this 06 Pontet Canet was muted and tannic. Found notes of milk chocolate from the start. But you can tell there’s a lot behind that wall. Decanted over an hour and then a burst of violets, perfume and tobacco showed up on the nose. Along with red fruit and oak. So balanced and well made. The palette mirrors the nose with the tannins softening. Still quite young and will easily last decades. It’s incredible where this Pontet Canet is at 15 years and more importantly where it’s headed. Plus at 13% alcohol, it’s a rarity these days. If you open now, decant for a few hours. 92-93 today, will easily hit a higher range in the future.

Update: Final glass 5 days later (Jan 5). Refrigerated with vacuvin. It’s mellowed out with some tannins still present in the background. Those nice elegant violets and perfume are no longer present. Has morphed into a more Napa Cab Sav oakiness with plum finish. Amazing how it has not fallen apart at all after 5 days. It’s built and made to last.
