May 25, 2022 - My pick of the various high end 2019 CDP's I have tasted to date. This is a big call, as I found the Clos des Papes rather stirring in a groinish sort of way. This one is for the mind first, the stiffy second but make no mistake, it still scores highly on the Stormy Daniels scale of stiffynosity.
I drank this over 3 days, decanted and from the first it was gorgeous. Early on I found the Grenache seemed strong in the blend but it was the good Grenache - strawberry, raspberry, some spice - not the lolly water/porty stuff that gives me the horrors. After about 6 hours blueberry (Mourvedre?) started to add to the picture in good ways, then I also got some restrained blackberry and plum. There is a little earthiness but this wine stayed very light on its feet, fresh and focused on exquisite, perfumed, primary fruits.
As I have noted elsewhere, the great wines seem to be about structure differentiating them from the merely excellent and so it is here. The sandy tannins are a delight, like vaulted arches in a magnificent cathedral.
My only hesitation is a reputation, deserved or not, from some Brettanomyces issues at the winery. I got nothing of this swine in my bottle and I note other reviews of this year don't seem to give any indication of badness lurking.11 people found this helpful 6,967 views
