My second vintage of this label. Great intensity of sugar snap peas, white flowers, and wild leafy herbs on the nose, with added crisp apple fruit on the palette.

Classic left bank Bordeaux, with nice black fruit and minerality showing on nose and palette. For my own taste I would like a touch more acidity than this bottle showed, but still a very nice bottle.

Terroir-istes International - Spain, Rioja White Wines (and a Rose) (Overgaauw Wine Estate): Mid yellow to gold. Powerful resinous, toasted almonds, honeycomb, a furfurol, smoky caramel element, hints of elderflower all make up a captivating nose.
Vibrant fresh acidity runs through the wine, broad in the mid-palate and a beautiful fleshy texture offset by a bone dry saline lemon-edged note. Notes of floral honey, green apple and a sappy note define the mid-palate; there is fair concentration and a real grippiness to the finish. Complex and great value!

Pall Mall 67, Singapore - Spanish Garnacha Themed tasting with producer Norrel Robertson. Norrel is a Scottish winemaker and MW now established since 2003 in Navarra where he farms vineyards predominantly planted to old Garnacha vines besides the occasional field blend. This comes from a beautiful steep hill-terraced vineyard. This was wine #6 in the tasting and palate fatigue was setting in such that I rated this mostly relatively to how high-elevation grenaches from Navarra had shown. I found quality and complexity in this but I could not get easily past the bigger bodied delivery. That was a bit tannic. While not my style I would give this the benefit of the doubt with greater aging and under the right circumstances/food pairing. In the same way I would with most Chateauneuf du Pape

From 375ml. Simply stunning wine! Energy and focus abound, with an enticing nose of orchard fruit and something evocative of cream and pastry. The palate is wonderful, gorgeously sweet, brimming with pear and confit quince supported by rippling acidity that drives a long, long finish. As this opened in the glass, tonality shifted to green apple with notes of mint and herbs. Wunderbar! Looking forward to a 2nd glass tonight to see how this evolves…

This originates from Navarra whose higher altitude terroirs support fresh and balanced Garnacha. And yet they pull off the feat of delivering 1.5% more ABV than their neighbours and flight mates. It is jammy and creamy as likely imparted by a generous oak treatment. An outlier in the cross-section of Navarran Grenaches. As heavy as the Catalunyan Grenaches in the tasting without the intrigue of the Mediterranean scents. Least convincing of the entire tasting for me. ERRATUM: upon verification this hails from Rioja albeit a cool-climate terroir. Assessment of style/body remains.

Opened very tight, decanted for ~2hrs and it softened and gained weight.
Still a very fresh wine with bright and tart red fruits and a little bit of stalkiness, warm spice, cedar, bright acidity and some crunchy tannins.
Nice wine but not quite sure it lives up to the price point. Would like to see it in ~5years.

Deep and mysterious with old soul, scents of blackberry and coal embers, rich, full, complex, generous and supple, not a fruit style but an herbal one, palate shows blueberry, chocolate, sage, teas and tobacco, long finish, in a nice spot to drink, will continue to hold longer as well, would match well with a rack of lamb

This wine balanced high ripeness without getting into abhorrent fig-jam territory. This is stemmy with chocolate and mint flavours, think 'After Eight" chocolates. Pleasant and fresh enough, no doubt a consequence of the higher latitude Navarra terroir.

For an affordable Riesling, this one has body and a bit of character. The taste is balanced, citrus'y but not very long. Suits someone who can take their time when drinking as this wine is better appreciated when you enjoy it with a moderate pace.

Would I buy this again? Sure, for a Riesling this is an easy but satisfying bottle.

This is deep, penetrating Chianti. Luscious black cherry fruit is at its core. It is an inky wine that has some pretty florals and dark chocolate too. It is big and powerful, yet perfumed and detail. Excellent poise, balance and length.

This wine is from one of his neighbors and were the best of the tasting pretty much on a par with Norrel's wines. In short 13%+ Garnachas that are very balanced, not overly extracted and lean heavily on whole-cluster winemaking with resulting freshness and florality on the nose. I also felt that the wine-making here was not overly modern with some remaining tannic bite and a light rustic aspect. I liked this and will be curious to try this producer without the distractions of a large group tasting.

Very deep red colour and after 8 years still showing no colour change in the glass. Still looks very youthful.
Decant time of two hours.

One of Norrel's wines who is a Scottish winemaker and MW now established since 2003 in Navarra where he farms vineyards predominantly planted to old Garnacha vines besides the occasional field blend. This came on the back of more heavily extracted and higher ABVs wines and was the first in the tasting that struck me as 'very drinkable'. Light at 13.5%, great balance. Very lithe. Very similar character to the better Sierra de Gredos grenaches (thing Comando G's Rozas 1er Cru) I have had. Nose screams of 100% whole-bunch winemaking but competently done. Lots of spices. Another wine that supports the idea that Spain has re-discovered mightily fine terroirs that express the best of the finicky Grenache grape. Try this if you see it!

My first impression is one of yellow cherries, together with orchard fruit, yellow apple more specifically, all slightly on the mature side. Then light flowery aromatics evolve into grapefruit and savoury, spicy (baking spices) lime notes, adding a green aspect. Good concentration of flavours. Overall the balance is just a bit off to the sweet side, as acidity is modest. This is an example of the type of Italian sauvignon blanc that I prefer over greenish, grassy SB wines.

Gnocchi with B&E (Ben and Estella's place, Parramatta): Decanted about 2 hours before consumption. Even on opening this had a touch of caramel oxidation but this didn't grow desipite the decanting, black hued fruits, caramel, fresh acidity, plenty of drying, grippy, woody tannins. Wrestled valiantly with the osso bucco.

Gnocchi with B&E (Ben and Estella's place, Parramatta): Everything you'd expect, a little wild ferment funkiness, smidge of well controlled whole bunch, blue over black berries, green and pink peppercorns, soft but persistent raw silk tannins, tiny drop of volatile acidity here that will inevitably grow with time but lends charming freshness and a tiny touch of rusticity. Drink up but nice in that lightweight style.

Full-bodied with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with mild complexity.

Showing sweet cherries, raspberries, spices, chocolates, tobacco, herbs, earth and peppercorn.

Short finish with fine grained tannins and tangy raspberries.

Would be nice to revisit it in 3 years.

Field blend from 40 to 60 years old vines, aged in wooden vats, bottled in 2007, total acidity 4.2 g/l, sugar 101.5 g/l, 20% vol.

PnP. Still very youthful with red fruit and chocolate, a load of smooth tannin, decent sweetness, good freshness and very long finish.

Good vintage port, not very complex yet, may improve with further cellaring.
