Introduction
Wines not tasted in this order...
Flight 1 (19 notes)
Red
2002 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Clos Vougeot
Gorgeous. Quite expressive; vibrant nose. Penetrating fruit leaning more towards the red side of the spectrum. Good acidity. A stand-out. $99 full retail.
Red
2002 Domaine Arlaud Clos de la Roche
$100 full retail. Black fruit. Coffee. Dense, deep, brooding. Great texture. Wow.
Red
2002 Domaine Robert Jayer-Gilles Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits
$30 retail, after discount. Showed really well as a ringer in a Grand Cru line up... Black fruit, tar, tobacco. Thick, earthy. Excellent.
Red
2002 Daniel Bocquenet Echezeaux
$80 full retail. A bit muted. Some herbal notes; black fruit; spice; minty. Not showing very well in this line up of '02s... Hmmm.
Red
2002 Domaine des Lambrays Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Les Loups
No formal note. Did not show very well in a line up of Grands Crus... Lightest wine in the flight.
Red
2002 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Chambolle-Musigny
Did not show well today - perhaps an off bottle? There was prominent horse aroma that was not too flattering for the wine... I'll assume this was an off bottle...
Red
2002 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers
$60 retail, after discount. Excellent. Dark cherry fruit; cola. Good acid / tannin structure. A stand-out.
Red
2002 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots
$60 retail, after discount. Very nice. Nice balance and mouth feel. Bright red / black cherry fruit. Currently showing more fruit than Chevillon's '02 Pruliers, which is a little tighter, but probably has better long term potential...
Red
2002 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles-St.-Jacques
$60 full retail. A nice surprise. Dark, pure fruit. Fairly serious structure. Well balanced.
Red
2002 Domaine Bertagna Vougeot 1er Cru Clos de la Perrière
Nice. Dark fruit. A bit tight on the nose. Meaty. Moderately oaky, but I think it will integrate fairly well with time in the bottle...
Red
2002 Domaine de Montille Pommard 1er Cru Les Pèzerolles
The texture was more elegant / suave than I would have expected. In fact, single blind, I though this was the '02 de Montille Volnay Taillepieds for sure... Bright red fruit; subtle spices. Lush. More open than the Volnay Taillepieds, but still quite primary and begging for some time in the bottle...
Red
2002 Domaine de Montille Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds
Tasted next to the Pommard Pezerolles '02 in a line up of '02 red Burgs... Surprisingly, the Pezerolles was much more open / expressive right now (see TN). The Taillepieds was tighter on the nose and showed more tannin / acid than the Pommard. Med bodied; red fruit. This one really needs to settle in, and I am optimistic about its potential...
Red
2002 Domaine du Château de Chorey (Germain) Beaune 1er Cru Cuvée Tante Berthe
$90 retail, after discount. HUGE wine. Big, black fruit; coffee; cola; cocoa; oak. This is a monster of a wine that will be a source of great debate among Burgundy drinkers (it was today...). Not what you would expect, that's for sure. This drinks almost like a super extracted new world Pinot, but it seems to have decent underlying structure... I will be interested to see what happens to this wine in time...
Red
2002 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru
Did not show well tonight. A bit raisiny. Fruit not as fresh as it might have been. Not a good showing...
Red
2002 Domaine Jean Garaudet Pommard Les Noizons
$35 full retail. Impressive. Big, juicy, blackish fruit on the nose. A little spice. A bit primary at present, but still showed very well in an '02 line up today. Solid value, with good med term cellaring potential. A nice surprise.
Red
2002 Henri Prudhon & Fils Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Les Rouges-Gorges
$34 full retail. Very nice. Ripe red / raspberry fruit. Good balance. Nice high notes. Good value.
Red
2002 La Pousse d'Or Santenay 1er Cru Gravières
$40 full retail. A little oak on the nose. Spice. Dark fruit. Good acidity. Fairly serious wine. Showed very well in today's '02 line up... Good value, overall.
Red
2002 Louis Chenu Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Lavières
High pitched red fruit. Fairly light. Seemed to fall apart with air. Did not show very well in a line up of '02s today...
Red
2002 Albert Morot Beaune 1er Cru Bressandes
$35 retail. Oaky. Coffee. Black fruit. Not my style. Some thought it was a new world ringer in a line up of '02 Burgs. Definately stood out as very different, stylistically.
