St. Innocent Mini Tasting

Edina Country Club, MN

Tasted March 7, 2010 by Mattshank with 452 views

Introduction

Wow! What a great mini tasting event with our core group at Edina Country Club. As usual in attendance were John G, John R (our congenial host), Kevin B, Gary A and me. Tonight's theme was St. Innocent Pinots and it was hands down one of the best offlines I have attended. All the stars lined up as every bottle showed brilliantly. Of course it helps that we all previewed our wines and aerated accordingly so as usual..."No corked bottles allowed". The evening was filled with not only great wine but good conversation and lots of laughs.

Flight 1 (7 notes)

White
2002 Marc Colin et Fils Saint-Aubin 1er Cru En Remilly Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru
91 points
Nose: Lemon zest with sea shell minerals. Palate: Candied lemon with the sea shell quality present. Good acid levels provide balance. Well made.
Red
2003 St. Innocent Pinot Noir Anden USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
92 points
Nose: Plums, violets and spice with a subtle herbal quality after some glass air. Later in the evening pronounced raspberry aromas show. Palate: Plums, raspberry (later) with solid acid and tannins leading to a lengthy finish.
Red
2003 St. Innocent Pinot Noir Shea Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton
93 points
Nose: Dark fruit and big lavendar aromas with stone minerals and chalk. Palate: Spice up front with superb integration of acid and tannin. Dark fruits with a lengthy finish. Really good stuff.
Red
2006 St. Innocent Pinot Noir Shea Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton
92 points
Nose: Black fruit and blueberry with dark earth aromas. Palate: Sweet dark fruits with a medium length finish. Very good but the '03' Shea is more evolved and complex at this stage.
Red
2007 St. Innocent Pinot Noir White Rose Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
95 points
Nose: Bright red fruits, amazingly floral with very pronounced loamy red clay aromas. Pure Dundee Hills AVA. Awesome nose! Palate: Almost perfume-like flavors with the high toned red fruits showing and the loamy qualities in full force. Great acid profile and a very elegant finish. This wine just kept going all night long and really showcases Mark Vlossak's winemaking talents. Wonderful wine and hands down my WOTN.
Red
2007 St. Innocent Pinot Noir Winemaker's Cuvée Freedom Hill & Vitae Springs Blend USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
92 points
Nose: Clay loam and red fruits with violets and a little funk on the finish. Palate: Good acid and red fruits with some subtle mushroom and earth showing. Very nice and elegant with good subtlety. While 92 points today this easily has 93+ point potential with age IMO.
Red
2002 Henri Jouan Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Clos Sorbé France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
94 points
Bonus wine from Gary A at the end of the night. Nose: Big raspberry with a little funk and perfume. Orchids and india ink also present. Very cool nose. Palate: Great acidity and very feminine with an array of red fruits (most notably raspberry and strawberry). A wonderful finish and a very close 2nd for my WOTN. Thanks Gary for sharing this gem!

Closing

A special thanks goes out to Gary A for bringing the starter white and a rock star Morey St. Denis. Thanks Gary! Also thanks to John R for his usual meticulous planning and venue preparation.
