Swig Wine Tasting

Intercontinental Hotel, London

Tasted March 23, 2010 by pjaines with 949 views

Introduction

The excellent wine Merchants, Swig, laid on a tasting of some of their wines. It was a good chance to taste my way through their range to see which other wines I would be interested in purchasing in the future. These bad-boys at Swig are responsible for leading me astray with their fine selection of wines on a regular basis. After this tasting it would seem that is not about to change much in the future - some top quality wines that are refreshingly different from the dross on sale on the high street

Flight 1 (21 notes)

White
2008 Weingut Winter Dittelsheim Riesling Kalkstein Trocken Germany, Rheinhessen
White flowers on the nose, semi sweet fruit with chalky, mineral laden palate. Good complexity and poise.
White
2009 Badenhorst Family Wines Chenin Blanc Secateurs South Africa, Coastal Region, Swartland
Soft, supple wine showing excellent depth of fruit. A touch of sweetness really carries the wine along - slightly lifted finish. Very decent stuff at £9
White
2007 Badenhorst Family Wines White Blend South Africa, Coastal Region, Swartland
Lots of stuff going on here - great nose of flint, minerals, complexity - strong sense of terroir here. Deep fruit on the palate - long lingering finish. Very very good.
White
2008 Red Claw Chardonnay Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Very good wine - nose is all flint, minerals and grassy notes. In the mouth there is a touch of soft fruit but then a nice acidic streak and a lovely fresh finish. Very good.
White
2008 Yabby Lake Vineyard Chardonnay Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Serious and sexy wine - lively nose of minerals, wet stones, flint, smoke. On the palate there is great poise and balance - lemon, butter, zippy fruit with a tarte finish. Balanced. Excellent wine.
Red
2006 Badenhorst Family Wines Red Blend South Africa, Coastal Region, Swartland
Classic south african nose here of tangy capsicum and pepper - fresh, bright red fruits. Tangy notes. Decent if unspectacular.
Red
2007 Pyramid Valley Pinot Noir Growers Collection Eaton Family Vineyard New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
Serious stuff - bright cherry nose with notes of fennel seed. Sweet fruit but avoiding the New Zealand stereotype taste profile - good freshness of fruit but with depth and lingering finish. Built for the long haul but is drinking well already. Excellent.
Red
2007 Pisa Range Estate Pinot Noir Black Poplar Block New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago
Dark core to this wine - meaty nose - in the mouth bitter fruit but with a sweetness coming through. Long long finish - very persistent. A more modern expression of Pinot Noir, but alluring and complex. Very young - this will be excellent in a few years.
Red
2006 Domaine Serene Pinot Noir Evenstad Reserve USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
Surprising wine - deep nose with fennel, aniseed and sweet cherry coming through. In the mouth this has a deep softness to it - if I tasted this blind I would hesitate to pin it down as pinot noir. Nevertheless, some good complexity going on here - tangy on the palate. I guess this really needs another 3-5 years in a dark cellar to unwind a touch. Lacks a touch of acidity and tannic structure for my taste. Still, a very good wine though
Red
2008 Red Claw Pinot Noir Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Bright red fruit nose - some chunky cherries in there. Palate is medium to light - sour cherries, unobstrusive tannins - somewhat generic in the taste profile but well made wine nonetheless.
Red
2007 Edoardo Miroglio Pinot Nero Bulgaria, Thracian Valley
Blimey !!! Bulgaria! Pinot noir? Indeed - and guess what? Its pretty bloody good as well. My tasting note I scrawled down said "Think New Zealand Pinot with with a touch of sulhur and burnt cherry". This is slurpy and very well made wine. Some cola-notes coming through and the odd tannic twang. Very decent stuff indeed.
Red
2004 Cupano Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Very modern style Brunello that is already showing some aging - excellent nose of soft fruit with plums, liquorice. Palate: sweet fruit, cigar tobacco, fine grippy tannins that stick to the teeth. Tasty, more-ish but needs food. Time will soften the tannins, but could be interesting to see how the fruit holds up over time as the wine was much lighter than expected for such a young pup

2005 Cupano Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Deep colour - much deeper than the 2004 which this was tasted alongside. Already showing good complexity and development of fruit - good tannic bite on the palate. Young at the moment - needs a few years to unwind and then this will be quite a serious wine. Excellent, but leave it in the cellar if you have any.

2007 Carlo Ferragu Valpolicella Superiore Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Valpolicella Superiore
Thanks to the fine ladies and gentlemen of Swig wines this is now a year on year purchase for me. This really is a Valpolicella on steroids, crack and god knows what else. The 2007 seems more "red" and less sweet than previous vintages - big juicy fruit in the mouth but with a tangy "redness" to it and much more freshness. There is still a huge battering of the tastebuds from the sweetness and depth but it is restrained. Stunningly good wine for the price.

2005 Carlo Ferragu Amarone della Valpolicella Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella
Goodness me! Tasted at the Swig Tasting event - I tried putting off tasting this bad boy until near the end of the night, but I succumbed early. This bottle was lurking in the corner emitting a sinister aura of malevolence that I felt unable to resist. I was expecting a big wine, but this is just huge - it is like drinking dark matter. Try and imagine what a black hole would taste like..... Got it? Good - well, this is what this wine is like. Deep nose of plums, orange peel, marmalade, raisins and incredibly dark dark fruit. On the palate this is like a riot kicking off on your tongue - bitter chocolate, primary fruit, a touch of heat, more orange peel, plums, and then just a tidal wave of all these mixed together. This is a "red face" wine - I could feel my cheeks literally filling with blood as I drank this. Brilliant. Probably not recommended by doctors or for those who embrace moderation.
Red
2006 Poggio al Gello Sangiovese Montecucco Rosso del Gello Italy, Tuscany, Montecucco
This is an outstanding wine for the price (£16). Nose - burnt nuts, yeast, semi-mature fruit of plums and red fruit with a touch of tobacco. Mouth - Tangy fruit with a richness to it that covers the mouth but at the same time there is freshness. Complex, alluring, slurpable and excellent quality for the price. I'm gonna get me some of this!!
Red
2007 Badenhorst Family Wines Secateurs Red Blend South Africa, Coastal Region, Swartland
Ripe fruit with good complexity - a sweet finish on the palate, balanced - would not have placed this as a South African wine. Excellent value at £10
Red
2007 Chamonix Rouge South Africa, Coastal Region, Franschhoek Valley
Nose of liver (!!!), iron, blood - steely, zippy notes on the nose. Bright red fruit notes but much smoother in the mouth than the nose would have you believe. Tangy finish. Average quality. My friend said it tasted "like a rusty shopping cart in a dirty canal", which was meant in a positive way.
Red
2006 Fattoria Lavacchio Chianti Rùfina Riserva Cedro Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Rùfina
Grippy tannins mixed with soft, deep fruit. Classic Chianti tastes with notes of cherries and tea-leaves (!!!) coming through. Decent but not spectacular.
Red
2007 Zagreus Winery Mavrud Tiara Bulgaria, Thracian Valley
Burnt herbs, hot on the palate with bitter aftertaste. Not to my liking.
Red
2006 Zagreus Winery Mavrud Cuvée Marie Claire Bulgaria, Thracian Valley
Wow wow wow. Surprise of the night for me - I was expecting a £7 Bulgarian wine to taste like, erm, well a £7 Bulgarian wine to be honest. This, however, is excellent - think Musar-lite but without the Musar-like poop odours. Light, sweet fruit with lots of spices and aromatics going on here. Made for slurping and not for aging I would suggest. Excellent value for money and different enough to warrant buying.
