Introduction

Some great friends from all different places got together on my rooftop in Woodley Park on a Friday night for some solid wines. There were more bottles than this, but these are the only ones I tasted. Each was interesting and unique, so there's no complaining there. Great company and weather. The night was a total success.

Flight 1 (13 notes)

White
2007 The Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Gris Dundee Hills USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
90 points
golden color, almost a tint of orange. the nose is really mineral-driven, gravelly almost with some nice orange rind. i totally would've guessed old world, maybe austria or something. it's got zesty acid but good body. still lots of minerals on the palate here. almost a bit of almond on the finish.

White
2008 Domaine Manciat-Poncet Mâcon-Charnay Les Chênes France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Mâcon-Charnay

had some nice green apple on the nose. medium-bodied, creamy, good butteryness. a bit of minerality. nice simple-drinking white.

Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Ployez-Jacquemart Champagne Brut Rosé France, Champagne
88 points
good salmon color. nose is pretty yeasty, attractive. bracing acid, medium body, good balance, with some toast and refreshing strawberry flavors.
White
2002 Meyer-Fonné Gewurztraminer Réserve Particulière France, Alsace
83 points
dark golden color. the nose on this was really nice. lots of apricot jam, marmalade. on the palate this was goopy for me. not enough acid. not much fruit either. just kind of sticky with not much of a finish. one of those wines you want to keep smelling, but not necessarily drink too much of.
Red
1981 Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Gravelly Meadow USA, California, Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain
89 points
the nose smells dead on like leather shoes! i love it. smoke and dark fruit compote, too. on the palate, this still had some tannins, but the fruit has waned. still a unique experience. definitely grabs your palate and catches your attention. not too much of a finish though.
Red
1986 Château Prieuré-Lichine France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
87 points
the nose on this one was smoky, leathery, dried flowers, good aged bordeaux characteristics. the tannins have weakened and the acid is a bit too much. not totally spent, but a bit over the hill.

Red
2002 Siduri Pinot Noir Hirsch Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
91 points
great stuff here. nose was explosive with pine needles, menthol, eucalyptus, juniper, all over a rich layer of cherry fruit. juicy acid, solid tannins... the flavors have evolved into a mix of zingy fruit with some secondary earth and tree bark flavors. solid finish.
Red
N.V. Sean Thackrey Pleiades XV Old Vines USA, California
87 points
i loved the nose on this. smoky, gamey, lamb hide, dark rasberries. good structure and acid. rich but not some fruit bomb. lot of complexity here. fun, unique stuff.
Red
2007 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Kanzler Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
93 points
aromas are so complex and inviting. cherry cola, root beer barrel, boysenberries... just goes on and on. big, obviously, but what i love about this wine is the silky mouthfeel. so velvety. rich fruit flavors, black cherries, cola, highlighted with some spice and pepper. long, lingering finish.
Red
2006 Twisted Oak The Spaniard USA, California, Sierra Foothills, Calaveras County
90 points
dark purple colored. what a totally dense nose. rich, black fruits. got a bit of white pepper. dense, but great structure. rich dark fruit, almost a bit beefy.
Red
2001 Paoletti Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
88 points
i liked the more restrained style of this cab. currant, oak and vanilla on the nose, transitioning to the palate, but it's medium-bodied, good concentration of fruit, accented by a good amount of oak, not too much.
Red
2003 Paracombe Cabernet Franc Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Hills
85 points
nose was really intriguing... lots of green pepper, licorice, blackberries. the palate was medium bodied. not as dense as i would've expected. the acid is surprisingly high. a bit thin for my tastes, but i respect this wine's restraint. it did start to fall apart quite quickly. this is definitely a food wine. might work as a good accompaniment to some stew or something like that.
White - Fortified
N.V. Blandy's Madeira Malmsey 15 Years Old Portugal, Madeira
92 points
rich amber brown color and viscous, of course. it smells like some sort of apricot reduction caramel dessert, if such a thing exists. also, there's this wonderful fig paste aroma, just like the richest, ripest middle easter figs you can get. thick, sweet, but it's got grip to the palate and refreshing acidity, so it doesn't feel goopy or anything. lots of brown sugar on the palate, creme brulee, again, figs with no end, and a bit of caramel candy bar. there's this flavor on the finish that reminds me exactly of that orange/chocolate candy that comes shaped like an orange and you crack it... i love those things. and this tastes just like that on the long finish. great with dark chocolate. it gets smoother. but, to be honest, i'd want this with some sort of fig dessert.
