Introduction

The night before and after Thanksgiving along with turkey day means lots of wines for our family.

Flight 1 - Prepping for Thanksgiving (4 notes)

Family over, drinking and eating pizza togther.

White
N.V. Barefoot Cellars Chardonnay USA, California
88 points
Amazingly good, far better than the others I've had. Inense, complex. Total surprise.
White
2009 J.W. Morris Riesling USA, California
90 points
I was going to be kind and give this an 84 or 85 and then I tried it 4 days later. It was like an auslese that was pretty darn good. I was surprised. It had complexity, depth, and huge pear and stone frutiness. Beautiful and surprising. Open for 4 days before drinking, I guess!
Red
2009 Viñedos Errázuriz Ovalle Panilonco Reserve Chile, Rapel Valley, Colchagua Valley
87 points
Much improved vintage. Lots of round fruity merlot and spicy malbec- far better than prior vintages I've had of this. Carmenare usually is better but not this one. Great value.
Red
2009 Viñedos Errázuriz Ovalle Carménère Panilonco Reserve Chile, Rapel Valley, Colchagua Valley
86 points
Usually the better of their two reds but I think this year may be reversed. Spice, hot, but lacks a little flavor right now compared to the past.

Flight 2 - Thanksgiving Day (14 notes)

Nice assortment, 3 turkeys, 30 people counting the 4 that came for dessert.

White
2009 Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
87 points
Nice basic to very good riesling. Lots of pear and apple and pineapple. Well balanced.
White
N.V. Cooper's Hawk Gewürztraminer USA, American
84 points
Nice spice and grapefruity citrus but lacks a little acid for balance.
White
2007 Chateau Montelena Riesling USA, California, North Coast, Potter Valley
90 points
Deep, complex and flavorful. One of the most complex US rieslings I've had in awhile. Kabinett to spatlese sweetness but bigger and more depth than most.
White
2010 Trader Joe's Sauvignon Blanc Viñas Chilenas Reserva Chile, Central Valley
84 points
Quaffing SB, cheap, ok.
White
2009 Contadino Pinot Grigio Italy, Delle Venezie
83 points
Basic cheap PG. Good value.

White
2007 Chateau St. Jean Chardonnay Reserve USA, California, Sonoma County
90 points
Big but not too big. Frutiy but not too fruity. Intense but not fake. I really liked this one! Not over buttered or over oaked, just right.
Red
2008 Kaella Winery Merlot USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
92 points
Huge round fresh fruit flavors. Cherries predominate, big ripe and luscious ones. Very approachable for a young wine. Decanted 5-6 hours. Over night it did not change from yesterday. This is a rich, elegant merlot. The flavors were so ripe and full. Lingering finish. Well done, gave it a pointmore than the more closed Meritage for now. I expect great things from both wines!
Red
2008 Kaella Winery Meritage USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
91 points
Huge wine. Very young, closed. Decanted for 5-6 hours and it was still pretty tight. Over night opened it up. This s a very complex and well made wine. The dark fruit, especially blackberries, predominate. Tannins are not big and astringent, but the wine does need time to develop more. Licorice, spice, with a big mouthfeel. Lingering flavors. 91, should improve from that!
Red
1992 Chateau Montelena Zinfandel Estate USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
Aged and refined. Nice orange on the rim, still purple in the center. Big blackberry flavors, spice is nice. Intense yet refined. Good finish.
Red
2006 Chateau Montelena Zinfandel The Montelena Estate USA, California, Napa Valley, Calistoga
89 points
Now I'm liking this better. Big, spicy, intense. Dark berry fruit. Blackberry,. cinnamon spice.
Red
2005 Jessie's Grove Winery Zinfandel Royal Tee Ancient Vine USA, California, Central Valley, Lodi
88 points
Huge plummy jammy intense wine. Very fruity and nice.

Red
2006 Vino Noceto Zinfandel OGP Grandpère Vineyard USA, California, Sierra Foothills, Amador County
92 points
Huge wine. The strawberry is almost gone but was replaced by a big dark fruitiness, deep spice, earth and maybe even leather and coffee. One of the best zins out there.
Red
2006 Vino Noceto Sangiovese Riserva USA, California, Sierra Foothills, California Shenandoah Valley
91 points
Intense earthy cherry fruit and dark flavors. Excellent wine. So refined.

Red - Fortified
2008 Vincent Arroyo Port USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
Much more autere and les fruit bomb like than the 2007. More traditional port flavors and mouth feel. Still has the Arroyo PS flavors.

Flight 3 - The Aftermath (3 notes)

At Leombruni's restaurant, drank the majoroty of the Noceto riserva here, too.

White
2008 Feudi di San Gregorio Falanghina Italy, Campania, Falanghina del Sannio
90 points
Flint, citrus, melon. More stoney flavors, less fruit that I remembered. Stlil great.
White
N.V. Cooper's Hawk Chardonnay Arneis USA, Illinois
88 points
Really nice flavors of pears, a little apple and buttery chard. Interesting, full flavored, lot of depth and fruit. Very cool little wine!
Red
2005 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley USA, California, Napa Valley
92 points
Beautiful. Not over done yet not over simplified. Deep and dark, intense flavors, dark black fruits. So nice.

Closing

Some surprises, few disappointments.
