Introduction

A wonderful evening of wines. Will be some time before this experience is topped.

Flight 1 (13 notes)

White
1959 Marc Brédif Vouvray France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray
94 points
Lots more 'fruity' fruit and sweetness that a previous tasting from last year. Very lifted and clean, incredibly so for the age. Can't see this ending anytime soon.
White
2000 Leeuwin Estate Chardonnay Art Series Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
92 points
Bright and prickly early but soon settled. Very classy but starting to age. Did change markedly in the glass over 20 min and shed its acidic tightness quickly.
White
2000 Giaconda Chardonnay Estate Vineyard Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth
93 points
Settled and mature but full of class. Wonderful use of spicy oak. Won't get much better.
White
1996 Louis Jadot Corton-Charlemagne Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
88 points
Almost closed compared to the Australian chards. Not a lot of obvious fruit and very austere. Some pong and minerals. Needs time? No crowd pleaser.
Red
1966 Wynns Coonawarra Estate Shiraz Burgundy Ovens Valley Australia, Victoria, North East, Ovens Valley
90 points
In great condition. Well aged nose but mostly fresh to taste. Old mushy forest floor fruits. An incredible effort from this region.
Red
1961 Seppelt Shiraz CH 19 Great Western Burgundy Great Western Australia, Victoria, Western Victoria, Great Western
89 points
Looking tired but still a great experience. Earthy, a little volatile, old red fruits. Winey, if that makes any sense.
Red
1965 Lindeman's Hunter River Burgundy Bin 3110 Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley
95 points
Full of life. Spicy red fruits and seemingly lots of supporting acid. Incredibly fresh and lively.
Red
1975 Pétrus France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
90 points
Chocolate and soft fruits. Fruits are very mature but holding very very well.
Red
1966 Château Haut-Brion France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
94 points
Close to WOTN but sentimental points awarded to the 3110 saw it pipped at the post. Green herbal fruits on the nose but full of stuffing. Pepper too. Similar to taste; very complete and linear. Sweet herbal fruits are a nice touch.
Red
1966 Penfolds Grange Australia, South Australia
89 points
Seems tired and perhaps the bottle wasn't quite right? Funky mushroom nose with a touch of cardboard. Soft old red fruits and chocolate to taste but a clear mushy fruit edge takes the shine off this wine. Very plush.
Red
1970 Château Mouton Rothschild France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
88 points
Subtle and cautious. Dry fruits with some acid. Good structure but nothing special.
Red
1986 Penfolds Grange Australia, South Australia
89 points
Very settled with a lick of sweetness from the oak. Deadly smooth. Lighter in structure than the 1976. Couldn't help feel that this bottle wasn't quite right.
Red
1976 Penfolds Grange Australia, South Australia
92 points
Good lift on the nose with an interesting eucalypt nose. Still firm to taste and plenty of bitter aniseed. Long and tight, particularly for its age.
