Introduction

Ths usual sucpsects gathered for another fun afternoon as the Scenic Loop Cafe.

Flight 1 (8 notes)

Red
2006 Fattoria Viticcio Chianti Classico Riserva Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
92 points
Bright nose with crushed berries, licorice and stone. Intensive fruit forward palate with polished red fruits, but a terrific backbone of fresh acidity, wet stone, and the hint of earth on a lengthy focused finish. Deft and balanced, with great poise and complexity. Really enjoyed.
Red
2004 Barone Ricasoli Casalferro Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
93 points
Complex terrific nose with blackberries, licorice, currants, and espresso, with a floral component. Round full palate, with enough acidity to pull things together. Has a a much darker fruit profile than the other wines, with black cherry and plum notes leading, with coffee and toast on the back end. Finished with toast and coffee character on a lengthy finish. Looking at the bottle, the 30% merlot component really fleshes this out as it is rather lush and ripe. Drinking great now, not sure it’ll get better.
Red
2006 Antinori Chianti Classico Pèppoli Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
88 points
Roasted and rainsy nose, with currants and plums on the nose. Palate is rather soft, with ripe dark fruits and licorice highlights. Finishes with a hint of coffee and a saline minerality. Fine drying tannins. Delivers for the price.
Red
2007 Fattoria Petrolo Torrione Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
91 points
Decants 4hrs prior. Bright pure red fruit with crushed berries, cherries, and licorice. Focused, slightly austere palate with prominent fine tannins. Pure, focus fruit palate with a saline minerality on the backend. Balanced and acidic, with great depth. Should be fantastic in 5+ years, though a little difficult to get into now.
Red
2007 Poliziano Rosso di Montepulciano Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Rosso di Montepulciano
87 points
A rather rustic nose with some crushed berries. Palate with nice red berries and a touch of a roasted burnt note. Medium simple finish. A nice table wine. Simple.
Red
2007 Castello Banfi Chianti Classico Riserva Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
A rather roasted pruney nose, with currants and dark fruits. Acidic and incredibly tannic, with the palate turning austere in a medium finish. Good fruit underneath, though difficult to assess now. Needs time.
Red
2008 Pio Cesare Barbera d'Alba Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Barbera d'Alba
89 points
Ripe cranberry and cherry nose, with the same bright red fruits carrying through a round lush palate with a stone spine. Low acidity, but still fresh and pleasant. Quite nice, though simple.
Red
2007 Renzo Masi Chianti Rùfina Riserva Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Rùfina
90 points
Expressive nose with espresso, prunes, currants, and black cherries. Refreshing acidity on the palate, rather balanced with fine drying tannins that became harsh with air. Black cherry fruit that carries on through a saline finish. Rather dark fruit profile. Turned austere with air, needs some time.

Closing

No formal scoring, but I believe the Casalferro won, with every wine getting at least 1 vote in the top 3 and the Torrione and Renzo being a distance 2nd. Thankd for a great afternoon everyone!
