Portland, ME

Introduction

Doug called and invited me over the other night for some impromptu blinds at his place. I have to say that this was really interesting to see how the wines performed. While there we re-tasted the Oreno I had opened the night prior and I brought a blind to add in the fun...

Flight 1 - Doug's Blind Whites (2 notes)

White
1999 Mayacamas Vineyards Chardonnay USA, California, Napa Valley, Mt. Veeder
90 points
A really interesting wine with scents of citrus, honey, caramel covered apples from the fair, and a blend of floral notes that was hard to pin down initially. This took a little time to get going, but once it was open I was really pleased. It has a fresh and crisp palate with med+ acidity and lithe fruit flavors. This was really a pleasure to drink....
White
2002 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
flawed
With a strong acidity and vibrant citrus and green apple notes on the nose and palate there was a note that started to creep in after the first 5-10 minutes...baked banana bread and brised apples...eventually this started to take over the wine and these signs lead myself and a close friend to view this as a case of Pre-ox....

Flight 2 - My blind white (1 note)

White
2006 Jean-Michel Gerin Condrieu La Loye France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu
89 points
Surprisingly this had more acid that I would have expected from this wine at this point in it's life. Full of bright tropical fruits on the nose and palate with a medium length finish. This feels like it could improve with another year or two in the bottle...it would be interesting to taste other vintages from this producer.

Flight 3 - Re-tasting the Oreno at 24+ hours open (1 note)

Red
2001 Tenuta Sette Ponti Oreno Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
90 points
NIGHT #2

Color: Ruby with slight bricking at the rim of the glass
Smell: Earth, smoke, leather, dark cherry, tobacco, cedar, mushrooms, and a melange of dried red and dark fruits.
Taste: A bit more muted tonight after being open for 24+ hours.
Overall: The wine is a tad muted tonight from last night...accept on the nose. The nose seems to scream from the opening...if only the palate had been able to keep up with the growth of the scents. I don't think that there is a rush to drink this given my experience with this wine in the past two days. However, I think that it straddles the new world/old world style on a very fine edge...
