Introduction

Dinner with Ken and Grace Evenstad from Domain Serene, a Chaine des Rotisseurs event, invited by Swig.co.uk.
I thought all the wines were good with food rather than on their own, but a nice walkthough of their very well made wines, a very pleasant evening out and great food pairings, except the dessert which didn't work for me

Flight 1 (6 notes)

White
2004 Domaine Serene Chardonnay Dijon Clones Clos du Soleil USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

quite a pleasant golden colour, rich and almost savoury nose, rich and viscous in the mouth with just a hint of caramel to finish, still some tension here and the fruit is integrated well with the moderate oak
White
2008 Domaine Serene Chardonnay Dijon Clones Clos du Soleil USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
85 points
Crisp and fresh, nice minerality and tension, the little oak needs time to integrate better, enjoyable with an asparagus and mozzarella starter
Red
2007 Domaine Serene Pinot Noir Evenstad Reserve USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
87 points
Bright and vivid in the glass, raspberries and red cherries, good acidity, paired with monkfish and pinot noir pearl barley and worked well
Red
2004 Domaine Serene Pinot Noir Mark Bradford USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
91 points
This wine is really drinking well now, in quite a classic burgundy vein, some lovely earthiness, soft dark cherry fruit, you get the first touches of bottle age, little tannin and balanced acidity, our WOTN
Red
2002 Domaine Serene Pinot Noir Monogram USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
90 points
tThe Domaine calls this their big boy pinot, and they are not wrong ! its big in almost every way, the nose had some nice complexity to it, cola, cherry, mushrooms but was overtaken by the vanilla a bit, in the mouth it tasted far too young, plenty going on with rich dark cherries, more mushroom and cola but still a big whack of vanilla and a little heat from the alcohol, personally I'd leave this for at least 5 years before drinking again, but it has everything there to be a great wine, assuming all the parts finally come together
Red
2004 Domaine Serene Syrah Rockblock Seven Hills Vineyard USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley
84 points
Deep garnet colour, excellent rhone style nose with the herbs mixed with brambly fruit, i thought the palate was a little disappointing after such a beautiful nose, but thats possibly as it was paired with a chocolate mousse with sour cherries which overwhelmed it completely
