Somers 202

Tasted July 13, 2011 by Vinomarcus with 607 views

Introduction

Our group of usual suspects met last night for our monthly debauchery at Somers 202 in Amawalk, NY. It is a bit less formal than our usual haunt “Pratts Inn” and we needed a bit of change to shake things up. They provided us a private room which was nice and the food was really good. I opted for tequila cured salmon with cucumber & mango relish, avocado tostada, jalapeño lime oil as my app and then bacon wrapped monkfish with french green lentil salad, micro greens, stone ground mustard drizzle for my entree. The wines were stellar matches to the food. Someone ordered some Taramasalata, which is a traditional Greek caviar mousse, served with warm pita, olives & cucumbers - we had that with the Greek wine - an impressive match to say the least.
The wine theme was “Whites & Rose’s” – we try to keep themes in line with the seasons and what better wines to drink in July? We had a very impressive lineup of wines. My meager notes follow.

Flight 1 (1 note)

White
2009 Booker Vineyard White USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
91 points
A big and fat wine, not want of oak treatment, but well integrated, very nutty flavors mixed with apricots and pie crust, creamy texture. Delicious.

From magnum

Red
2010 Château Vignelaure Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence Rouge France, Provence, Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence
87 points
Light and refreshing notes of strawberries and cream, nice balance and acidity, crisp.

Flight 3 (1 note)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Domaine de la Taille aux Loups Triple Zero France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Montlouis-sur-Loire
86 points
Lots of yeast flavor, dry, hazelnuts, walnuts, touch of tea leaves, tight bubbles, enjoyable.

Flight 4 (1 note)

White
2009 Sigalas Assyrtiko Santorini Greece, Aegean, Cyclades, Santorini
87 points
Very crisp and dry, some dried apricot and mango flavors, nearly shrill, but a lovely match when paired with the Greek caviar mousse - a match made in Olympus!

Flight 5 (1 note)

Rosé
2009 Weingut Knoll Blauer Burgunder Federspiel Loibner Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
88 points
Dry, herbaceous, some dried floral notes, very acidic and tart, some nice light red fruit flavors, well put together and fun to drink.

Flight 6 (1 note)

White
1990 Leth Roter Veltliner Scheiben Wagram Austria, Niederösterreich, Wagram
93 points
If you did not know this was a white wine, you would swear up and down that this was a Northern Rhone Red, specifically I said a Cornas. Amazing notes of game, smoke, flint, dark fruit, hints of chalk on the mouth as well. A touch flabby, but you would never, ever guess this was 21yr old white wine, still has plenty of time to go.

Flight 7 (1 note)

White
2008 Cadaretta sbs Columbia Valley USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
89 points
Crisp and clean, golden delicious apple, lime, lemon zest, very nice aromatics. Really nice.

Flight 8 (1 note)

White
2005 Sine Qua Non The Petition USA, California
94 points
My bottle - Dark yellow color, huge amounts of vanilla laden oak, peach cobbler, lots of butterscotch and melted butter, a creamy but very full texture, fills the mouth. Lush and big, for me the oak was a part of the wine and not a hurdle to get over so I really liked it, others didn't.

Flight 9 (1 note)

Rosé
2009 Sine Qua Non Packin' Rosy USA, California, Central Coast
92 points
My wine - Dark color for a rose, huge notes of fresh picked strawberry and cranberry, sinfully delicious, nice structure and fun to drink.

Closing

We had a ball, the private room was great to have, the service was non stop and the food was delicious. I'd happily go back again. Next months theme will be "beer" and we'll be heading back to Pratt's for a wed night bbq!
