My House, Chicago IL

Introduction

Some friends from Washington DC were in town for my wedding. So what better to do than the day after the wedding than to have them over for dinner for some additional celebrating.

Flight 1 (3 notes)

We planned for a pretty casual evening. The Champagne and White Burgundy paired with some cheeses, pates, and sliced meats as canapes. To go with the Rousseau, I made a Spinach salad with roasted beets, candied walnuts, goat cheese and seared Duck Breast. For the main course, I grilled at 3lb Rib Eye and served it sliced with duck fat roasted potatoes and Brussels Sprouts.

White - Sparkling
1996 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne
Slight golden color. Yeasty, baked apple nose with lemon peel notes. A slight oxidative note. Ripe and mature orchard fruit notes on the palate. Nice acidity, but not as intense as previous bottles. Moderate plus finish. Still a very nice Champagne, but this showing was more advanced than I would have liked to see.
White
2007 Paul Pernot et ses Fils Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Folatières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
Consistent with the bottle I had last year. I really enjoy the energy this wine has. Beautiful minerality and acidity. Great juicy citrus notes.
Red
2000 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
From magnum. Powerful aromatics of dark red berries and cherry with roasted meat and dark spice. Some pretty floral notes in the background. Powerful meaty flavors on the palate too, intermixed with lots of sweet red berries. A firm mineral backbone along with great acidity all throughout. Medium bodied with a long finish. Beautiful wine.
