Leroy 04 horizontal

Introduction

An opportunity to open all 5 Leroy 04 at the same time. Most of us agree the Chambolle and NSG are showing better tonight, Bourgogne is aging fast. We are wondering how could AM gave a score of 95 to the VR? Perhaps he drank it at the peak back in 05 and the bottles been declining since? Not sure but consensus is that the Gevrey, VR and Bourgogne need to be consumed soon.

Flight 1 - Auvenay Auxey Duresses blanc (2 notes)

04 is good as expected, while the 03 is much better than we thought!

White
2003 Domaine d'Auvenay (Lalou Bize-Leroy) Auxey-Duresses Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Auxey-Duresses

Much better showing than the last bottle from another source. Trademark nutty and roasted corn nose, nice citrus fruit. As one taster noted this bottle is remarkably restrained for a 03, full but well delineated palate, nice acidity lift at the end. Drinking very well and will hold this way for well stored bottles.

Compared with the 03 side by side, this showed additional freshness, leaner and more acidic at the end. The same awesome roasted nuts and popcorn nose. But overall a well balanced wine, and this bottle is fresher than the last and needs more time like another year to fully flesh out, awespiring Auxey blanc!

Flight 2 - Leroy 04 rouge lineup (5 notes)

Red
2004 Domaine Leroy Bourgogne France, Burgundy, Bourgogne
88 points
Drank side by side with the 4 other 04 Leroy and really shows that this wine is starting to decline. Same cloudy red-brown in color, nice floral nose but the palate is lumping together from 3D to 1D, in fact a but thinning and the finish is rather short, with tangerine juice like character. Drink up unless you like to smell rather than to drink.
Red
2004 Domaine Leroy Gevrey-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
91 points
Nose is typical Leroy 04, with perhaps slightly more tea like character besides being floral. Showing very well today, what I would say a flamboyant nose, rounded and very sweet fruit, nice medium finish. Also need to enjoy this sooner than later.
Red
2004 Domaine Leroy Chambolle-Musigny France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny
92 points
Slightly deeper and fresher red in color than the others, pretty much same aged floral nose, palate a bit more backward today with quite fresh acidity lift at the end, rather short finish drinking well and can keep longer.
Red
2004 Domaine Leroy Nuits St. Georges France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges
93 points
Same nice Leroy floral nose with some extra meatiness. nice slighter deeper but the good thing is the palate is wider than the others, with slightly bigger dimensions and robustness that I enjoy after drinking the thinner ones, still got decent potential to keep and no green notes.
Red
2004 Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanée France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
91 points
Much better bottle than last time, nice alluring floral nose, but palate a bit weak this time especially besides the NSG and Chambolle. Still a decent drink but not sure how much life is left.
