Pre-Sale Tasting

White
2002 Paul Pernot et ses Fils Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Vegetal evolution, good intensity but seems to lack richness, a poor bottle? Does not seem representative for Pernot BBM style or quality. A bit of a puzzle. Not rated.
White
2002 Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
95 points
Rich, Turkish delight almost, clearly a Grand Cru, beautifully toasted oak, nice and buttery, wonderful acifity, magnificent.
Red
2001 Domaine Dujac Clos St. Denis France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos St. Denis Grand Cru
93 points
Fabulously fragrant, Chambolle-like. Of the highest quality, still young, great style, finesse and length.
Red
2001 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
93 points
Compared to the Dujac Clos St. Denis deeper and more structured, spicier, a lot of wood, very pure, still s bit unformed but opens up beautifully over two hours.
Red
1996 Château Mouton Rothschild France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
94 points
Still closed, finesse, many layers, depth, structure and length. Long life. 2016 - 2036.
Red
1994 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection USA, California, Napa Valley
92 points
Sweet fruit, impressive depth, but so much oak. Not high on toast but there is just too much of it. No finesse or style - at least not my style.
Red
1997 Henschke Shiraz Hill of Grace Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley
95 points
Big nose of beefstock and eucalyptus, deep, no noticeable wood, pretty evolved already, power and velvet, excellent length.
Red
1997 Penfolds Grange Australia, South Australia
94 points
Excellent depth, sweet fruit, less expressive than the Hill of Grace, massive, young and quite closed still, a very impressive classic, firm structure, long. Long life.

Flight 2 - Dinner (6 notes)

White
2002 Domaine Michel Niellon Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chaumées Clos de la Truffière France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
92 points
A wine of elegance and finesse, lovely focus and freshness, playful.
White
2000 Louis Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
92 points
Finesse and structure, rich but clean style, perfectly integrated oak, nice mealy and vegetable notes, slender but intense.
White
2000 Louis Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
94 points
Compared to the Perrières 2000 richer and more exotic, archetypal Combettes, almost Grand Cru.
Red
2001 Rene Rostaing Côte-Rôtie La Landonne France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
93 points
Delicious, so fine, feminine and shapely, powdery and perfumed, toute en finesse.
Red
1999 Noon Shiraz Reserve Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Langhorne Creek
92 points
Black, inky, incredibly deep and rich, sweet fruit, liqueur, not as exotic as the HoG, not as classic as the Grange. Impressive rather than charming.
Red - Fortified
1997 Graham Porto Vintage Portugal, Douro, Porto
92 points
Young, still closed, a structured and elegant 1997, less sweet than some other vintages.
