Flight 1 (12 notes)

White - Sparkling
1998 Gaston Chiquet Champagne Special Club Brut France, Champagne
91 points
Tasted blind - medium straw in colour. Nose of baked apple and toast with hints of yeast and floral notes. In in the mouth this has a soft feel with great acidity and flavours of lemon, apple and toasty bread. A long finish here and while this is drinking very well right now there’s no rush either. Excellent.
Red - Fortified
N.V. Graham Porto Emperor Tawny Portugal, Douro, Porto
89 points
Tasted blind - medium brownish amber in colour. Notes of charred honey, brown sugar, dried papaya and hints of Christmas cake. Smooth with some sweetness coming through and well-balanced. Very good.
White
2010 Cowan Cellars Sauvignon Blanc Isa USA, California, North Coast, Lake County
87 points
Tasted blind - light to medium yellow with a copper hue. This was slightly cloudy/frosted. Nose is quite pronounced with notes of sweet citrus and orchard fruits. The nose was exotic, but not tropical. In the mouth it’s crisp and dry which was not expected after the nose with medium acidity and some richness coming through on the palate as well. This was different and quite interesting. Very good.
White
2010 Mendel Sémillon Argentina, Mendoza, Valle de Uco
88 points
Tasted blind - light yellow in colour. Chablis like nose with notes of flint, lemon citrus and minerals. Many of the tasters guessed white burg. Softer in the mouth but with lots of acidity and finishes fairly fresh. Very good.
White
1999 R. López de Heredia Rioja Blanco Viña Gravonia Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
87 points
Tasted blind -light to medium gold colour. Slightly oxidized aromas come from the glass with notes of tropical fruit, cheesy funk and hints of honey and toast. In the mouth this is soft with sweeter flavours and a slightly sour finish. Very good.
Red
2004 Marchesi Alfieri Pinot Nero San Germano Italy, Piedmont, Monferrato
87 points
Tasted blind - medium ruby moving to a slight brown/red hue at rim. Sweeter nose of somewhat roasted cherries and plums. Lots of acidity with decent length. Very different side of Pinot Noir that was quite interesting. Drink or hold. Very good.
Red
1994 Château La Louvière France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
89 points
Tasted blind – medium to dark red. This jumped from the glass with notes of bell pepper, coffee and dark red fruits…profile here reminded me of a cab franc. Lighter in the mouth but still showing some tannin and really good acidity. Tastes like mature Bordeaux with a good dose on cab franc thrown in. I liked this quite a bit. Fully mature and time to drink. Very good.
Red
1994 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
91 points
Poured into a decanter and served 30min later. Medium red with bricking throughout. Funky nose that seemed very southern Rhone-like, even for those who were tasting it blind, with lots of earthy and tertiary notes with some darker red fruits poking through. On the palate this shows its full maturity with a soft mouthfeel, solid acidity and good length. Drink now but no rush. Excellent.
Red
2002 Stark-Condé Cabernet Sauvignon Stark South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch
89 points
Tasted blind – Dark red in colour. After the pair of 94s this probably seemed younger than it actually was with a sweeter nose that offered dark fruits and hints of well-integrated oak. Richer red fruit on the palate with a well-balanced mouthfeel. I thought this might be left bank Bordeaux. Drinks well now. Very good.
Red
2001 Velenosi Ludi Marche IGT Italy, Marche, Marche IGT
90 points
Tasted blind – dark red colour. Cooler nose but with sweeter cherry and plum aromas and noticeable oak treatment. In the mouth this is rich with concentrated dark fruit flavours and lots of acidity and medium tannins. Nice length. Drinking very well now but this is far from falling apart. Excellent.
Red
1998 Kenwood Zinfandel Jack London Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley
86 points
Tasted blind – no formal notes. Medium red bricking at the rim. Sweeter aromas and flavours of red fruits that was fairly well balanced. I never would have guessed this to be a Cali Zin. Good.
Red - Fortified
1970 Taylor (Fladgate) Porto Vintage Portugal, Douro, Porto
94 points
Tasted blind – Medium to dark red in colour easing towards the rim. Sweet and youthful on the nose with dark red fruits, spice and Christmas cake aromas. Flavours of dried red fruits, nuts, spice and hints of brown sugar. Sweet yet fresh with perfectly balanced structure. This is broad shouldered but refined and is extremely enjoyable to drink right now. Outstanding.
