Introduction

Casual tasting with David and Thijs.
A rollercoaster of a night, with huge disappointments (5 flawed bottles), but also a couple of very memorable ones.

Flight 1 (5 notes)

White
1998 Domaine de Bellivière Jasnières Les Rosiers France, Loire Valley, Jasnières
flawed
Orange in color, nice and slightly sweet Chenin-nose, reminiscent of root beer, with some evolution. But in the mouth it's completely dry. Odd wine. Appeared oxidized to me. Strange that it didn't show that on the nose.
White
1999 Freie Weingärtner Wachau / Domäne Wachau Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Ried Kellerberg Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
Obtained from a very cool and humid cellar. Still in perfect condition. Wonderfully aged, but still fresh and fruit-tinged GruVe.
White
2004 Schlossgut Diel Dorsheimer Burgberg Riesling Großes Gewächs Germany, Nahe
Tasted alongside Diel's Pittermännchen GG 06 and Goldloch GG 05.
Liked this one best, because of its heavy-dosage wet pebble and slate minerality and clean citrusfruit (Goldloch had more of a tropical charateristic). Lovely, creamy texture... Very nice!
White
2005 Schlossgut Diel Dorsheimer Goldloch Riesling Großes Gewächs Germany, Nahe
Tasted alongside Diel's Pittermännchen GG 06 and Burgberg GG 04.
Ripe, lush, floral, fairly fat and concentrated. Very good, but I preferred the more elegant and restrained Burgberg.
White
2006 Schlossgut Diel Dorsheimer Pittermännchen Riesling Großes Gewächs Germany, Nahe
Tasted alongside Diel's Burgberg GG 04 and Goldloch GG 05.
Subdued aromatics. Closed for business.

Flight 2 (3 notes)

Red
1970 Château Boyd-Cantenac France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
Pure, clear and fresh. Carrying its age beautifully. This wine is very friendly and drinkable. No ancient acidity, but rather red berries, sous-bois, incense. Also during the reassessment, next to assorted cheeses, it stood its ground. Applause.
Red
1970 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
flawed
Much denser and darker than the Boyd-Cantenac. But, alas, it was tainted. Slightly drying and oxidated.
Red
1985 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Absolutely fantastic. Just liked mature Bordeaux ought to be. Insane complexity and at the same time so fresh, light on its feet and drinkable. Tonight we realised (again) that these kind of wines are truly unique. This could not be from any other area. To be honest I am afraid that even in Bordeaux these kind of wines are becoming endangered species. Enjoy them now, while they're still there...

Flight 3 (7 notes)

White - Sweet/Dessert
1984 Domaine des Petits Quarts (Godineau) Bonnezeaux Le Malabé France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Bonnezeaux
Fresh, bright and clean. The diminishing sweetness is creating a demi-sec like character. Strikingly light in colour. Lovely wine.
White
2002 Domaine de Bellivière Coteaux du Loir L'Effraie France, Loire Valley, Coteaux du Loir
flawed
(Also) oxidized...
White
2001 Domaine de Bellivière Coteaux du Loir Vieilles Vignes Eparses France, Loire Valley, Coteaux du Loir
flawed
Hideously oxidized!
White - Sweet/Dessert
2001 Château Doisy-Védrines France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Very feminine and elegant wine, refreshing mouthfeel. Lots of juice and sap, perfect for now, but will cellar for 20 years easily...
White - Sweet/Dessert
2003 Bodegas Julián Chivite Navarra Reserva Coleccion 125 Vendemia Tardíva Spain, Navarra
Top-class dessert-wine and a worthy stand-in for a Sauternes. Despite its considerable concentration this one stays fresh and light on its feet. Certainly not heavy or flabby. Wonderful stuff.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2004 Sepp Moser Chardonnay Trockenbeerenauslese Austria, Burgenland, Neusiedlersee
Insane concentration, lively acidity supports this elixir to the end. Is this chardonnay? Unbelievable... Stayed intact during the rest of the week. Great stuff.
