Pinots on Friday

Introduction

A Friday night with a bunch of twenty-something young adults just beginning to explore fine wines.

Flight 1 (4 notes)

Red
2009 Maison Alex Gambal Bourgogne Cuvée Les Deux Papis France, Burgundy, Bourgogne
87 points
Slightly reductive nose. Flavors of pretty red pinot fruit with some hints of licorice and earthy notes with soft, chalky tannins on the finish. Not overly complex but a very good Bourgogne with a very good qpr.
Red
2004 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Ile des Vergelesses France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru
84 points
Very green, vegetal nose with a very vegetal presence on the palate. Some pretty red Pinot fruit and licorice make an appearance on the mid palate but over all the fruit is quite reserved. The tannins on the finish are also very green and firm. Interesting but not my favorite vintage.
Red
2004 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Corton-Bressandes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
88 points
Same firm green vegetal components as the 1er Des Vergelesses but the red Pinot fruit has significantly more depth and heft, helping the green notes fade into the background. Quite nice for the vintage.
Red
2008 Archery Summit Pinot Noir Premier Cuvée USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
90 points
The lone domestic Pinot of the night. Much darker and more extracted than the burgundies. Rich dark Pinot fruit, earth and licorice. Noticable but not intrusive oak. All in all, quite nice and the favorite of the Pinot flight.
