Hong Kong Club

Introduction

A dinner organised by the Antique Wine Company who have offices here as well as in the UK, South of France and San Francisco. This is a pretty exclusive location, so we were glad of the invite. Even better when the food and wine rolled out. All compered by Stephen Williams, their MD. Lots of fun, great wines and an eclectic group of people.

Flight 1 (1 note)

Rosé - Sparkling
2002 Pol Roger Champagne Brut Rosé France, Champagne
92 points
Bread and flowers on the nose. Strawberries on the palate with nicely balanced acidity. This went down very well with the group.

Flight 2 (2 notes)

White
2005 Domaine Bruno Clair Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
92 points
Pale gold. Spicy, smokey nose but quite closed. Seemed dense and closed on the palate - quite creamy with some butter flavours. Good length. This never really opened up, even after 2 hours in the glass. I think it needs another few years.
White
2006 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
93 points
Pale yellow. Open citrus and stone-fruit nose - quite mineral. Quite full-tasting in the mouth and long. This seems perfectly ready now.

Flight 3 (2 notes)

Red
2000 Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
92 points
Spicy blackcurrants on the nose. Delicate in the mouth with very little tannins evident - quite fleshy and round. Seems ready now - not much to develop.
Red
2000 Carruades de Lafite France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
92 points
Deep ruby. Blackcurrant and a hint of green pepper on the nose. More marked tannins than the Pavillon but not dominant. Easy drinking now. I preferred this slightly as it had more structure and bite - probably a Paulliac thing.

Flight 4 (2 notes)

Red
1990 Château Haut-Brion France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
98 points
Ruby with pale rim. Very smokey on the nose with blackcurrant, black truffle and black raspberries. Also some tobacco - black tobacco??
Great feel in the mouth. Long with a sweetness from the fruit on the finish. This was complex and got better and better in the glass.
Seems to be drinking at its prime.
Red
1996 Château Mouton Rothschild France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
95 points
Mid+ ruby. Deep flavours of cassis and spice - not quite as open as the Haut Brion though. Full bodied, smooth and round but with structure. Quite mineral. Probably needs a few years to develop further. This is a great wine but it seems a shame that it was opened next to the HB - couldn't quite keep up. Oh well!
