1996 Bordeaux Tasting at CWS

Southlake, Texas

Introduction

We wanted to see how the 1996 wines were aging (very nicely, btw). Great tasting at a great facility--Classic Wine Storage.

Flight 1 (1 note)

White - Sparkling
1996 Louis Roederer Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne
91 points
Very impressive wine that was not overwhelming. Nice hint of toasted honey and background citrus notes.

Flight 2 (7 notes)

Red
1996 Château La Conseillante France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
89 points
Definitely smelled like a right bank wine, but it was a bit amber on the edges and the acidity seemed somewhat unbalanced. With that said, solid wine. I don't know if I would buy more of the 96, but I would buy the 98, if available at a good price.
Red
1996 Château Lanessan France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
88 points
Very smooth wine, really in its drinking window. Beautiful red color, just started to give up the slightest hint of amber on the edge. Drink up.
Red
1996 Château La Mission Haut-Brion La Chapelle de La Mission Haut-Brion France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
88 points
Drink up.
Red
1996 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
90 points
Very, very solid wine with a smooth texture. Very much in its drinking window.
Red
1996 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
92 points
Amazing wine with the potential to become even better. I have tried this wine on multiple occasions, and I really believe it has just entered its drinking window and has plenty of life left. The tannins are already smoothing out and the requisite complexity is readily apparent. Very serious wine. A 95 pointer some day.
Red
1996 Château Lynch-Bages France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
91 points
Classic wine with what I call the “Lynch-Bages” characteristics definitely present that I have problems putting into words—sort of a mixture of lead pencil and earthy herbs. I really want to visit this winery to see what grows in the vineyards and vicinity. It is a very unique flavor that I’ve picked out in all the well cared for Lynch-Bages wines I have had. This wine just seems like it is entering its drinking window, and it will evolve greatly in the future. Lots of upward potential.
Red
1996 Château Pontet-Canet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
92 points
I was really surprised how fresh and vibrant this wine was. Did not seem like it had the overall aging potential of the 1996 Lynch-Bages nor 1996 Ducru, but it was the WOTN for me.
