Introduction

Time to get together to have a casual wines session with my wines buddies and drink our shared bottles. The 1966 Château Croizet-Bages was a true surprise as all of us felt that it was holding up so well. That shows that indeed provenance is very important for such an aged bottle. On the other hand the 1998 Nicolas Potel Echezeaux was a disappointment. Not because the wine not good just that we tasted it much earlier. Lastly not forgetting the 1975 Château Angélus tasted so good and it is my WOTN.

Flight 1 (3 notes)

1966 Château Croizet-Bages France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

A shared bottle and understand this bottle was brought in directly from Chateau itself that's why everything in excellent condition: label, ullage and cork. Of course we are paying for the premium but I think that well worth it.
It has a subtle nose, showing plenty of black currant, some tobacco and hints of integrated oak. The palate is amazingly vibrant and it does not taste like a 46 years old wine. The fruits is holding well and lively, predominantly blackcurrant, with cigar box comes through at midpalate. It retains a nice medium+ bodied entry although it turns soft at the midpalate and finish with an unimpress aftertaste.
This is a very impressive bottle judging from the vintage and it comes from an always forgotten fifth growth producer. Starts to fall after one hour in the glass with fruits slowly dried up.
Red
1975 Château Angélus France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
92 points
Beautiful mature colour, glossy brick red core with mahogany tinge. Nose of spice, black fruits and hints of mineral, soil and floral notes. It shows a good Cab Franc character with black fruits, spice and earthiness on palate. Supple mouthfeel and elegant, it has plenty of acidity flowing through the mid-palate. Long finish with fine tannins.
Red
1998 Nicolas Potel Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
90 points
It has a youthful appearance, dark ruby core with crimson hue. The nose is very tight when pop and pour, subsequently it is decanted for 2 hours. Slowly open up to show fruits dominant nose, lots of berry fruits and cherry with just a touch of earth. It is a robust wines and I feel we tasted it at least 5-10 years earlier, plenty of black fruits and red fruits on palate. Nice finishing with rich fine and ripe tannins. It is a very good Burg but it is not showing at its full potential yet.
