Tasted September 26, 2010 by VinLancaster with 400 views

Introduction

Only one day in Bordeaux, en route to St. Clar, Midi-Pyrénées, Department Gers.

Flight 1 - Château du Taillan (2 notes)

Red
2006 Château du Taillan France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
87 points
Tasted at the Chateau. Nice entry BDX. Boasts ample beefy notes, cassis and plum. Slightly thin on mouthfeel but has a satisfying floral finish.
Red
2002 Château du Taillan Cuvée des Dames France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
86 points
Tasted at the Chateau. This is the bigger of the two red bordeauxs offered. Aromas of dusky cherry and earth. Herbaceous, clove, leather, black currant and beetroot were present on the palate. Finish was lengthy, but rough around the edges

Flight 2 - Château Paloumey with Château Le Garricq and Château La Bessane (4 notes)

Red
2005 Château Paloumey Ailes de Paloumey France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
87 points
Well rounded red fruit, smoke, slate and cassis. Palate was medium weight, but smooth and offered a kick of black olive and mocha towards the end-interesting. Tasted at the Chateau, with a lovely private tour of cellar room and vineyards.
Red
2004 Château Paloumey France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
85 points
Not as ready to drink as the les Ailes de Paloumey, this needs more bottle time. It was very green, offering tabacco leaf, eucalyptyus and sharp black fruit. It was tart and tanninc, but with good potential.
Red
2005 Château La Garricq France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Moulis en Médoc
86 points
Very dark cranberry in color. A bit of barnyard funk on the nose with sandalwood, smoke and black currants. Palate was light and medium bodied with black and red fruits, toasted vanilla and a good dose of minerality and loam. Finish was smooth, but not at all lengthy.
Red
2005 Château La Bessane France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
88 points
This had been decanted several hours by the Chateau madame and what a difference I am sure it made. Mostly Petit Verdot (but I failed to note the percentage). Concentrated ripe blackberries, dried figs and cigar box aromas. The palate didn't quite match up to the nose, but it produced subtle black fruit, coffee, and a hint of yeast. Finish was generous with mineral, fruit, spice and so very silky. This was my favorite at the Chateau.
