Served blind, and my spidy-no-like-syrah senses failed me. Silky, very pretty, ripe and mouth-coating but maintaining a lightness; fruit driven, cherry and floral. Lacking syrah typicity (which is a good thing to my palate), but very enjoyable and well made.

1975 Zilliken (Forstmeister Geltz) Saarburger Rausch Riesling Kabinett Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Was less enamored with this wine than others at the table. Nose was quite nice, but a somewhat hollow mid palate and clipped finish suggest it is getting on in years. A treat to try, though. =
Red
1996 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
ham hock, bacon, forest fire; intense. +
Red
2002 Olga Raffault Chinon Les Picasses France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon
Showed as very young and primary despite its ten years, though some of that could have been the company of older Bordeaux.
White - Off-dry
1989 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Completely outclassed by the '88 Auslese poured alongside it. Good acidity, elegant Mosel frame, but little to distinguish it. =/-
White
1989 Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Turckheim France, Alsace
Dry, very rich. Green apple, citrus, baking spices. Good (=)
Red
1999 Eric Texier Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
Charred and smoky; dull, unexciting
White - Off-dry
1983 Von Schubert Maximin Grünhäuser Abtsberg Riesling Auslese Nr. 88 Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Good, but in tough company alongside Prum's Sonnenuhr 88. =/+
White
1990 Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Brand France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru
Beautiful nose of citrus fruit salad and honey. Sweet candied lemon, botrytis, stone fruit on the chalky, rich palate. I was much more enamored by this than others around me, despite the protruding alcohol. Very good. ++

1988 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Reserved nose of leather and an austere palate. The mouthfeel is beautiful, silky, but there is little fruit or character. The tannins are fairly light, and a couple of hours of air did not offer much improvement, remaining simple and reserved.

1988 Château Cos d'Estournel France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Very classic nose, focused palate, medium finish. Very nice. +
White - Off-dry
1988 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
One of my favorite wines of the night, with amazing richness and complexity, but cut by piercing acidity and amazing balance. Excellent. ++
White - Off-dry
1989 Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Fairly complex nose, quite quaffable, though neither memorable nor remarkable. =
Red
1983 Château Talbot France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Leather, earth, red cherry, and yummy yummy funk. Drinking beautifully, but no hurry to drink up. Very good. +
White - Sweet/Dessert
1998 Weingut Weegmüller Haardter Bürgergarten Riesling Eiswein Germany, Pfalz
My note consisted of the word "Yum," followed by an exclamation mark. This word was circled. Twice.
White - Fortified
N.V. El Maestro Sierra Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Amontillado 1830 Spain, Andalucía, Jerez-Xérès-Sherry
toasted almond, salinity, savory; very vibrant and fresh
Orange
2005 Radikon Oslavje Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Venezia Giulia IGT
Very weird, strange wine. Deep, intense color; very complex nose, with a salinity and saltiness. I don't think I *enjoyed* this wine, but I kept returning to it as it was strangely captivating.
Red
1984 Dunn Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley USA, California, Napa Valley
flawed
Very pale fruit. Sourness dominating with time.
