Top burgundy dinner

Medlar, Chelsea, London

Tasted November 27, 2012 by Rupert with 390 views

Introduction

Seven us brought some of our best burgundies, and very lovely they were too. The reds were surprisingly similar, all showing red fruits, silky textures and exhibiting a restrained grandeur.

Flight 1 - with pig's head croquettes and gougères (1 note)

White - Sparkling
2002 Pierre Péters Champagne Grand Cru Cuvée Speciale Blanc de Blancs Les Chetillons France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
93 points
Very fine, delicately textured, some minerals, some citrus, all finesse

Flight 2 - with Crab raviolo, samphire, brown shrimps, fondue of leeks and bisque sauce (3 notes)

White
2003 Marquis de Laguiche (Joseph Drouhin) Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
Smooth, glycerine texture, but fresh, powdery, lovely, much more restrained than I was expecting.
White
1993 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Monts Mains France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
89 points
Pungent, wet wool nose, the fruit on the palate a bit sickly, big and interesting, not delicious
White
1983 Albert Pic Chablis Grand Cru Valmur France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
92 points
Assertive oyster shell nose, very lively, explosive even, classic mature chablis

Flight 3 - with Chargrilled Englsh veal rump, violet artichokes, aubergine caviar, crisp brain, gremolata and roasting juices (3 notes)

Red
1994 Faiveley Chambertin-Clos de Bèze France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
92 points
Dusty, red fruited, restrained grandeur, very fine
Red
1994 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
93 points
Sweet next to the Faiveley, a similar red fruit flavour profile, but a tad softer with more gaminess, lovely
Red
2001 Domaine Francois Lamarche La Grande Rue France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Grande Rue Grand Cru
91 points
Others found the table pointed out broad sweet bacon fragrance, and they were right. Red fruited, a bit of spice and funk, not as refined as the two preceding wines.

Flight 4 - with Roast mallard, confit leg, buckwheat pancakes, beetroot, star anis and pear (3 notes)

Red
1998 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
92 points
Yet again, red fruited, restrained and grand. Youthful, fine
Red
1991 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Romanée St. Vivant France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
93 points
Seven years older than the Richebourg, but really very similar with its silk and red fruits, a bit broader with hints of tobacco and exotic spices
Red
1979 Louis Jadot Musigny France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
93 points
The most unbuttoned wine here tonight, funky, yet silky on the palate, perfumed, an interesting medicinal tone, super
