Another Saturday at Knightsbridge - mostly blind
Northbrook, IL
Tasted February 2, 2013 by Burgundy Al with 340 views
Introduction
Much smaller and shorter than usual given that today's tasting followed Fine Vines' wonderful tasting of new Burgundy releases.
Flight 1 (7 notes)
Red
2005 Gros Frère et Sœur Richebourg
Tasted double blind. Big and firm fruit to start with modest spice. Firmly structured palate, lots of bold fruit, lots of power, minerality. Today this is slightly short on spice for Richebourg. Needs lot of time in the cellar.

2002 Nicolas Potel Bonnes Mares

Tasted double blind. Black fruit aromas with plenty of barnyard. Similar fruit on palate, modest spice, overall very forward. Slightly below expectations for a good producer's Bonnes Mares from a good vintage at this early stage.
Red
2003 Louis Jadot Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts
Tasted double blind. Very perplexing wine, I thought it Rhone, not Burgundy. Lots of ripe intensity with plenty of power, short on minerality and acidity, but I guess that is the 2003 vintage. I have a single bottle in the cellar and will hold it to 2020 or later to see if it becomes more characteristic and/or interesting.
Red
1993 Coche-Dury Auxey-Duresses Rouge
Tasted double blind. Starts with plenty of horse and barnyard. Ripe and powerful but a little bit rustic and firmly tannic throughout. Black fruit, also very dense.
Red
2001 Pierre Damoy Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Vieilles Vignes

Served double blind to the tasting group. Slightly barnyardy to start, which blew off after 10-15 minutes. Intense and powerful mostly black fruit with meaty spice and overall character. Great spice. Incredible length and persistence.
Red
2006 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Tasted double blind. Great red and black cherry aromas, very ripe but charming. Very elegant and balanced, despite clearly lots of ripe fruit on palate. Slight spice. Great textures.

2008 Domaine Denis Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St. Jacques

Tasted double blind. Forward red and black cherry aromas with ok chewy spice. Forward and meaty on the palate in an elegant style. I thought it from 2007 given how forward it came across today, but in retrospect there was more power than I'd expect from 2007 1ers.
