Blind Tasting - 2010 Loire Chenin Blanc

Weygandt Wines - Washington, DC

Introduction

Several regulars gathered at Weygandt Wines for a wonderful lineup of 2010 Loire Chenin Blanc. All of the wines were double decanted before serving. The tasting itself was done single blind. One wine was repeated within the tasting, without the knowledge of the tasters. It proved to be a great opportunity to check in on a bunch of different styles and producers. Overall we are really enjoying the vintage, as it comes across as well balanced with adequate acidity for the cellar. The clear standout was the 2010 Huet Sec Clos De Bourg, which was simply fantastic. Thanks to Warren for organizing, we had a great time!

Flight 1 - Unblind Aperitif (1 note)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Domaine de la Taille aux Loups Triple Zero France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Montlouis-sur-Loire
87 points
Rich aromas of apple, brioche, and cinnamon spice. The slightly sweet, medium bodied carries a fine mousse, as sweet tangerine and preserved lemon linger over an undercurrent of saline minerals. The finish is a bit more dry and characterized by baking spice and tart citrus. A nice aperitif. R&M87

Flight 2 - Blind 2010 Loire Chenin Blanc (14 notes)

White
2010 Nicolas Joly Savennières Les Clos Sacrés (Les Vieux Clos) France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières
84 points
Tasted Blind. Explosive, rich aromas of apple cider, oxidative pear, and white flowers. Very spicy, quite oxidative palate of rich orchard fruit and pronounced spice. The finish is long but a bit disjointed, as tart lemon, cinnamon, and straw emerge. This is an intense, interesting wine, but not necessarily overtly enjoyable. R&M84
White
2010 Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Blanc La Croix Boissée France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon
89 points
Tasted Blind. Reserved nose of pears, orange zest, and honeysuckle. Medium-full bodied palate showing ripe apples, baking spice, and fresh honey. The medium length finish is progressively tart, with nice lime acidity and granite minerals. Very good. R&M89
White
2010 Le Rocher des Violettes Montlouis-sur-Loire Touche-Mitaine France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Montlouis-sur-Loire
86 points
Tasted Blind. Aromas of grilled peach, chalk, and dried green herbs. Focused, directed tart lemon palate with tart pineapple and gravel minerals emerging on the finish. Light to medium bodied with searing acidity, this is a wine that demands food. Hold. R&M86
White
2010 Eric Morgat Anjou Blanc Litus France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Anjou
91 points
Really fantastic nose of caramelized lemon, honeysuckle, and crisp orchard fruit. Balanced, textured palate, with wonderful tension between sweet pear/orchard fruit and underlying slate/saline minerals. Lifted, long finish of lemon, tangerine, and crushed sea shell. Delicious, with great promise in the cellar. R&M91
White
2010 Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Blanc La Croix Boissée France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon
88 points
Tasted Blind. Placed twice within the same blind tasting. Rich, baked apple nose with white flowers and candied orange. Full bodied palate of lightly oxidative orchard fruit and savory honey. Medium length, interesting finish of spiced citrus and dried herbs. Well balanced and enjoyable. R&M88
White
2010 Domaine Huet Vouvray Sec Clos du Bourg France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray
92 points
Tasted Blind. Stunning, vivid aromas of rich orchard fruit, light petrol, and dew covered gravel. Magnificently balanced palate pairing honeyed, lush orchard fruit with lively lemon/lime acid and complex minerals. A vein of saline minerality drives the long, lingering finish of tart peach, pineapple, lavender, and honeysuckle. This is very, very good. R&M92

White
2010 Domaine de la Taille aux Loups Vouvray Sec Clos de Venise France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray
89 points
Tasted Blind. Reserved nose of tart lemon and crushed sea shell. Focused on the palate with mixed bitter citrus and lemon hard candy. The medium-long, juicy finish adds tart peach, minerals, and white flowers. This needs a bit of time for the acidity to integrate, but should be very good in the future. R&M89
White
2010 Un Saumon dans la Loire Montlouis-sur-Loire Minéral + France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Montlouis-sur-Loire
88 points
Tasted Blind. Lightly oxidative aromas of baked orchard fruit, brown spice, and charred lemon. The focused palate is similarly styled, with lightly oxidative apples/pears, lemon, and dried flowers. The interesting, medium length finish features grapefruit zest, cinnamon, and anise. R&M88
White - Off-dry
2009 François Chidaine Vouvray Le Bouchet France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray
90 points
Tasted Blind. Distinctly richer, sweeter aromas of candied orange, honey, ripe pineapple, and mango. Clearly demi-sec and full bodied on the palate, with ripe tropical fruits and honeysuckle well balanced by finishing caramelized citrus, slate minerals, and tart lime acidity. A bit sweet now, but should be excellent with some time in the bottle. Hold. R&M90

Tasted Blind. Excellent bouquet of ripe green apples, baking spice, almond butter, and lilies. Fantastic, tense, medium-full bodied palate of crisp apples, rich pear, creme brulee, and cinnamon. The slate mineral driven finish adds candied citrus, perfect orchard fruit, and clove. This is wonderful, with a bright future. R&M91
White
2010 Richard Leroy Chenin Les Rouliers France, Vin de France

Tasted Blind. Complex aromas of waxy citrus, pear, white pepper, and nutmeg. Rather energetic and interesting palate of crisp pear, mango, and salted nuts. The long finish features vivid tart green apple, fresh hay, and almonds. This is very good but feels young and has clear promise in the cellar. R&M90
White - Off-dry
2010 Domaine de Bellivière Jasnières Premices France, Loire Valley, Jasnières
88 points
Tasted Blind. Very fresh nose of saline, crushed seas shell, lemon, and lightly oxidative orange. Rich, medium-full bodied palate of ripe stone/orchard fruit balanced by finishing tart waxy citrus, minerals, and dried apricot. Enjoyable, if a bit unexciting. R&M88

2010 Richard Leroy Chenin Les Noëls de Montbenault France, Vin de France
90 points
Tasted Blind. Vivid apple cider, caramelized citrus, and honeysuckle aromas. Full bodied, but paradoxically crisp orchard fruit flavors later transition to mixed citrus and white flowers. The very long finish adds saline, roasted nuts, and savory preserved lemon. Again feels very young, but with nice promise. Would like to try with some air. R&M90
White
2010 Domaine aux Moines Savennières Roche aux Moines France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières Roche aux Moines
89 points
Tasted Blind. Great nose of apple cinnamon, saline, and petrol. Medium bodied palate with opening ripe orchard fruits and honey roasted nuts. Striking, long finish of lingering citrus, nut butter, clove. This uses its light oxidative style to its advantage, with very nice acid. R&M89
