Introduction

Rob Panzer of Down to Earth Wines was kind enough to present Burgundy wines for the Red Clay Chapter of The American Wine Society monthly meeting. The wines were all well balanced and they showed real well. Rob was very informative and everyone had a good time.

Flight 1 (9 notes)

White
2010 Domaine Michel Lafarge Bourgogne-Aligoté Raisins Dorés France, Burgundy, Bourgogne-Aligoté
Pale color, tart, crisp, lemon, slightly floral, long pleasant finish. Solid.
White
2010 Guilhem et Jean-Hugues Goisot Bourgogne Côtes d'Auxerre Corps de Garde Blanc France, Burgundy, Côtes d'Auxerre, Bourgogne Côtes d'Auxerre
Lemon, lime and suggestions of mineral on the nose; tart lemon, citrus, mineral, and vanilla. Paired well with shrimp. Enjoyed this.
White
2010 Domaine Matrot Meursault France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
Golden in color; Apple and spice aromatics; Baked apple, richer than the previous whites, a little oak, and spice, good acid. Strange finish that I couldn't identify but thought it could be nutty or almond.
Red
2010 Guilhem et Jean-Hugues Goisot Bourgogne Côtes d'Auxerre Corps de Garde Rouge France, Burgundy, Côtes d'Auxerre, Bourgogne Côtes d'Auxerre
Slight funk on the nose, cherry, a bit of rubber; dry, cherry, taut, fine tannins. Nice with pork loin.
Red
2010 Domaine Roger Belland Santenay 1er Cru Gravières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Santenay 1er Cru
Aromas of ripe cherry and red fruits. On the palate the wine is deep, black cherry, faint earth, lots of fruit. I like this. There might be something to this red burgundy thing.
Red
2010 Domaine Roger Belland Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Clos Pitois Rouge France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Darker in color than the gravieres - more purple. Darker tones of fruit too. Black cherry, some licorice. Softer and silkier on the palate. Really good.
Red
2009 Clos Salomon Givry 1er Cru Clos Salomon France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Givry 1er Cru
Some earth, smoke and maybe sulfur initially on the nose. Textured, fine tannins, tart red fruits, leaner than the chassagne-Montrachet. Popular with the group.

Red
2010 Domaine Pavelot (Jean-Marc et Hugues) Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Guettes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru
Fruity nose, dark fruits on the palate, licorice, structure, masculine. I'm digging this. Very young.

Red
2010 Domaine Pavelot (Jean-Marc et Hugues) Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru La Dominode France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru
Lower in the valley and more south facing the the aux guettes. It show in that it is a little softer and more approachable now. A little plusher too. Darker fruits, a little licorice. Good stuff.

Closing

My favorite white was the Goisot Corps De Garde - Nice minerality, salinity, crisp lemon/lime fruit and good acidity. That is my preferred style of Chardonnay at the moment.

It was difficult to select a red WOTN as they all showed well. For value, the Goisot was really nice ($23). The Belland and Pavelot wines were excellent. Great balance between fruit and structure. They can be enjoyed now or for many more years. Overall a great tasting, and this red burgundy newbie learned a lot. I am beginning to understand the saying "all roads lead to Burgundy".
