Introduction

3 recent vintages of Backus against 3 of Insignia

Flight 1 (6 notes)

Red
2004 Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon Backus Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
96 points
Fantastic cab. Very dark purple. Complex nose of dark chocolate, dark berries, plums and sweet oak. Full-bodied, dense, with firm tannins of excellent quality, ripe but by no means stewed fruit and balancing acidity Very long aftertaste. Needs another 5 years to reach its peak but can be already enjoyed with a richly sauced meat dish.

Less powerful than the 2004 but more etheral. Licorice, blackberry and cedar on the nose alongside the dark chocolate that is one of this wine's signature aromas. Full-bodied with less ripe fruit compared to the 2004, hence tannins and acidity are perceived as higher here. Aftertaste is long. This was the Bordeaux lovers' darling among the wines of this tasting.

Stand between the 2004 and 2005 in terms of richness, but aromatically it is different to both, with a less fruity and more savory aromatic profile. Charcoal, barbecue smoke and scorched earth alongside dark chocolate, dark plums and blackberry jam with sweet spice. Full-bodied, dense and very long with firm, fine-grained tannins and a relatively high acidity that sets it apart from most top Napa cabs. Needs time to nintegrate its components.

This was the most "ready to drink" from the lot. Dark purple with an expressive nose of dark berries and plums alongside licorice and violets. Full-bodied, with relatively low acidity and velvety tannins. Long aftertaste.

Remarkably softer and closer to peak compared to the Backus from the same vintage. Round, balanced and fruit-forward with a long aftertaste.

Wine of the tasting to most. Very dark, opaq. Combines ripeness and freshness of fruit in a unique manner. Dark plums, licorice, charcoal, violets and ink on the nose. Full-bodied and dense with balancing acidity and textbook tannins. Very long aftertaste. A masterpiece that will fully unwind its complexity in 5 years or so.
