Introduction

Had the pleasure of a great 40th birthday dinner with my wife and another couple at NoMad. Special thanks to our server Mark and the sommelier Ryan who helped make our dinner fantastic. Also a owe a special thanks to Chambers Street Wines who provided a replacement bottle of the '73 Murrieta after UPS broke the 1st one. Great food, wine and company made for a special night.

Flight 1 (3 notes)

White - Sparkling
1996 Henriot Champagne Cuvée des Enchanteleurs Brut France, Champagne
95 points
Richy creamy texture. Light steady mousse. Lemon flavors with just a touch of acidity balancing the smooth texture. Some apple flavors as well. Outstanding mature champagne, really hitting its stride. Particularly nice complement to lobster.
Red
2008 Rhys Pinot Noir Alpine Vineyard USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains
91 points
Opened about an hour before drinking. Medium bodied pinot dominated by cherries with some tart raspberry notes as well. A nicely put together pinot, but in my opinion this needed a lot more air than it got and I will probably refrain from opening one for at least 2 more years. Scored a 91 for current drinking but I definitely think this will show better with more time or at least more air.
Red
1973 Marqués de Murrieta Rioja Ygay Etiqueta Blanca Spain, La Rioja, Rioja

Great fill well into neck. Cork came out in one piece but soaked. The sommelier brought this over looking a bit disappointed, and seemed to think it wasn't really showing many signs of life. By the time it hit the table though, it was literally exploding with a bouquet of cherries and violets. really complex with some hints of tobacco and earth and maybe a bit of soy. really showing explosive fruit for 40 year old bottle, but it faded significantly over about 30 minutes. paired exceptionally well with beef tartare. An eye opening experience with Rioja as old as me.
