Small fine wine lunch

The Ledbury, London

Tasted July 2, 2013 by Rupert with 386 views

Flight 1 - Canapé - a roe thing on a squid ink wafer (1 note)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Bérêche et Fils Champagne Reflet d'Antan France, Champagne
Onion skin colour, fine fizz, dried fruit, sweet at the core, more refined than the last batch, with none of the wildness or the funk. Precise for such a big wine. Super.

Flight 2 - Filllet of wild salmon with lemon verbena, courgettes and shellfish (1 note)

White
1983 Trimbach Riesling Clos Ste. Hune France, Alsace
Petrol, high toned, oily but fresh, fine, pure, essence of riesling, still youthful.

Flight 3 - Poulet de Bresse baked in hay with new season English potatoes, summer truffle and morels (1 note)

Red
1998 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
Direct, medicinal, intense dried fruits (hints of Musar in fact, though obviously much finer), young, vigorous and exciting

Flight 4 - Short rob of ruby red beef with celeriac baked in juniper (1 note)

Red
1971 Camille Giroud Corton France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Earthy nose, almost musty, but piercing fragrance and silky texture, lovely on the palate, with that old wine magic

Flight 5 - Alphonso mango with citrus curd, burnt meringue and kaffir lime beignets (1 note)

White - Off-dry
1989 Egon Müller/Le Gallais Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel Auction Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
The flavour profile recalled that of the CSH with its pure riesling note, but the finish was long, sweet, coconutty. Delicious.

Flight 6 - Cheese (1 note)

Red
1978 Camille Giroud Charmes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Plush, rich cherry fruit, muscular but a real beauty
