Introduction

Tasting at the Cellars Wine & Spirits in Roseville. Flowers winery was the main theme, with a few other wineries through the distributor.

Flight 1 (8 notes)

White
2011 Ritual Sauvignon Blanc Chile, Casablanca Valley
88 points
Interesting Chilean sauvignon blanc which sees 5 months in French oak - very unusual for the varietal, especially in Chile.
Aromas and flavors of hay/grass, grapefruit lead to a mellow mild crispness. The oak aging has rounded out the corners, leaving a more full bodied sauvignon blanc which does lack some of the typical zestiness. Still, a good wine at the price point.
White
2011 Flowers Chardonnay Sonoma Coast USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
90 points
Light and more Burgundian in style than Cali. This is well-balanced, mild chardonnay with good acidity and a long finish. This is a prime aging Cali chardonnay.
My wife preferred this style more than I.
Red
2011 Flowers Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
89 points
Light in color and style, with aromas of cherry, cedar, and herbs. This is a well-balanced Cali pinot which is a little too simplistic at its price point for my taste. However, this style should improve markedly with ageing. Drink 2017-2023.
Red
2010 Flowers Pinot Noir Sea View Ridge USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
91 points
This is a big pinot, yet still elegant and light on its feet. Light in color, smooth, with plenty of flavor, firm acidity, and enough tannic grip to keep you interested, this is quality pinot. I would sum this up as delicate yet powerful.
This is yet another ager from Flowers - let this one sit.
Red
2010 Flowers Perennial USA, California, Sonoma County
90 points
What an odd and interesting wine.
50% Pinot Noir, 42% Syrah, 6% Pinot Meunier, 2% Chardonnay for this vintage. Drink now - 2015 -- this is not meant for ageing.
Light in aroma, sporting a firm body, good acidity, and a slight pull from the tannins. This was just... different. I found this small pour unique and tasty. Would I enjoy a full bottle? Only time will tell...
Red
2010 Primus The Blend Chile, Rapel Valley, Colchagua Valley, Apalta
89 points
Amazing QPR -- drank this price blind.
Dark purple in color, with a somewhat odd and unique aroma exhibiting green pepper and spice.
A little too tannic at the moment, I'd give this one a year or two before drinking by itself. Drink 2015-2018. However, this would make an excellent food wine, and my ideal pairing would be BBQ ribs.
Red
2010 Faust Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
Interesting "Napa" cabernet from Coombsville and Rutherford. Overall this is cool climate cab, aged for 19 months in French Oak. This has mellowed nicely and is actually approachable now.
83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 3% Malbec, and 1% Cabernet Franc.
Red
2008 Neyen Espiritu de Apalta Chile, Rapel Valley, Colchagua Valley
90 points
This is somewhat of an odd duck. 80% Carmenere, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. I loved this wine and my wife did not.
I found the earthy and spicy earthy absolutely inviting and enveloping, with long legs and firm tannins.
My wife considered this a food wine with spice, a powerful long finish, and not yet ready to drink.
So in our family the jury is still out!
