Introduction
We stopped at Potomac Point on our way down to Williamsburg for a long weekend to celebrate our anniversary.
Flight 1 - Dry Whites & Rose (3 notes)
White
2012 Potomac Point Vineyard & Winery Chardonnay
87 points
round nose & palate, very wet in the mouth, green fruit - apple & some pear - short finish.
White
2012 Potomac Point Vineyard & Winery la Belle Vie
88 points
faint melon notes on the nose and then again a bit stronger on the finish. maybe a touch syrupy.
Rosé
2012 Potomac Point Vineyard & Winery la Belle Vie
84 points
no nose, dry palate, very little fruit, not my favorite
Flight 2 - Dry Reds (5 notes)
Red
2011 Potomac Point Vineyard & Winery Abbinato
84 points
this had a pleasant mild oaky nose but was giving up nothing on the palate. light body. just not much there for me.
Red
2010 Potomac Point Vineyard & Winery Cabernet Franc
rough tannins, prominent dark fruit notes (blueberry?) with a typical peppery cab franc finish that lingers. well enjoyed.
Red
2006 Potomac Point Vineyard & Winery Heritage
88 points
soft, smooth, a little bite on the front of the tongue. Speaks of place -- it has a Virginia flavor profile featuring all the best aspects of that profile, wearing its slightly thin body well for a nice overall package. The blend is 45% malbec, 35% cab franc, and 20% petit verdot.
Red
2010 Potomac Point Vineyard & Winery Petit Verdot
89 points
Like the 2006 Heritage tasted before it, this is "Virginia Thin" but wears it well. This adds big tannins against that medium/light body in the style of a barolo, but the smoke & leather flavor profile suits the combination. It's also an all-nose all-star - - 91 for the nose but 89 overall. Very Virginia. I'm a fan.
Red
2011 Potomac Point Vineyard & Winery Norton
87 points
This medium-bodied wine had the best mouthfeel of all the wines in the portfolio at Potomac Point. Intensity all over the palate, with mouthwatering acidity. I didn't get much flavor from it, but the mouthfeel was the story here.
Flight 3 - Dessert Wines (2 notes)
White - Sweet/Dessert
2010 Potomac Point Vineyard & Winery Vin de Paille
sweet nose with some heat showing. This is made from Vidal Blanc, Petit Manseng, and Muscat Raisin, but has a flavor profile leaning toward Welch's concord.
Red - Sweet/Dessert
N.V. Potomac Point Vineyard & Winery Rabelos
89 points
noteworthy for how light this is - almost airy and yet deep flavored. Dark cherry, especially on the back of the palate. Long finish. A light-bodied port-style wine. Who knew?
Closing
After the tasting, we enjoyed a fabulous lunch in the winery's bistro - highly recommended!
