Some Cote de Nuits 2007 at the Cottage

Tasted July 20, 2013 by Antti with 333 views

Introduction

To entertain ourselves during a cottage trip, we tasted a wine from each of the five major villages of Cote de Nuits, wondering how the supposedly early maturing 07s would be doing. The vintage is of course not widely acclaimed, but seems to offer some pretty wines to drink with food. We tried to pick wines that would supposedly be in a nice place now. All the wines were first tasted on their own and finally finished with roasted duck and ratatouille.

Flight 1 (5 notes)

Red
2007 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Nuits St. Georges Clos des Fourches France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges
The "second wine" of the 1er Cru Clos de la Marechale, a Mugnier monopole. Quite light on the colour, but that rarely means much. Somewhat understated at first, giving dry red fruits. Opened up and worked very well with food, earthy aromas and a whiff of spice emerged. Not exactly a thrill-ride, but a well balanced and -made classic Burgundy. Thumbs up.
Red
2007 Domaine Bruno Clavelier Vosne-Romanée Les Hauts Beaux Monts Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
From quite high up the Vosne hill. Subtle, minimal intervention winemaking. Around 15% new oak. This is quite interesting. Showing well from the get-go, beautiful aromatics of stylish cool fruit and mineral nuances. Very tasty and balanced on the palate, and full of delicate tension. Clearly a hillside wine in character, I liked this a lot.
Red
2007 Maison Alex Gambal Chambolle-Musigny France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny
Mix of Les Barottes & Aux Echanges lieux-dits. 30% new oak. Positively fragrant, flowery red fruit nose. However, there's strange, almost chemical, whiff in the background, that doesn't disappear during the night. Odd, could have been an off bottle, so I'll reserve judgement this time. Otherwise, it's perfectly OK.
Red
2007 Forey Père et Fils Morey St. Denis 1er Cru France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
This comes from one miniscule parcel crossing the boundary of two 1er Crus: Les Blanchards and Clos Baulet. Around 50% new oak, which I felt was a bit obtrusive at this age still, and not yet totally integrated. Some of the others in our group didn’t see the problem. Apart from that, this seems to be a well made wine, dark toned and rather masculine meaty in style, requiring a couple of more years of sleep. The structure is quite prominent too.
Red
2007 Domaine Louis Boillot et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
Ripe red cherries on the nose, rather lush. Fruit on the front. By far the most full-bodied wine of the flight, the deep fruit seems to hide the details behind it. There's a good structure as well, so I'd give these a bit more age, to allow the fruit to fold into the background.

Closing

Some were drinking very nicely at the moment, whereas a couple were not in the perfect place for my tastes right now. Clavelier and Boillot got most votes, I clearly preferred the former.
