Introduction

Sadly, I only got a chance to take brief notes. All wines paired with tacos from Big Star.

Flight 1 (11 notes)

White
2009 Sine Qua Non On The Lam USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County
90 points
Very rich, peachy nose. Oily palate, with some bittersweet almond notes.
Red
2006 Bernard Dugat-Py Gevrey-Chambertin Très Vieilles Vignes - Coeur de Roy France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
90 points
Very big and fruity, with a nice touch of oak, but all in all a bit out of proportion in comparison to the palate. Quite delicious nonetheless.
White - Off-dry
2010 Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Spätlese Auction Germany, Nahe
93 points
Green and linear, classic Doennhoff nose, though there was a whiff of sulphur. Balanced as Doennhoff always is. Lots of green and yellow fruit on the palate; laser-like precision and long finish.
White - Off-dry
1983 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
93 points
Very funky and musty on the nose, which is pretty typical for old Pruem. Some sulphur as well. Palate is quite sweet but balanced. Some animal notes on the palate, but this is quite alluring.
Red
1998 Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
85 points
Weedy, peppery, and spicy on the nose. The palate is quite green and chewy, with not much else showing up. Disappointing.
Red
2001 BOND St. Eden USA, California, Napa Valley
75 points
Purple drank. Like grape juice and oak chips in a Blendtec ad (which by the way, unlike an iPhone, will not blend). High-toned nose, with some alcohol showing up. Heavy-handed winemaking showing lots of unintegrated oak. Yuck.

Red
2009 Rivers-Marie Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
83 points
This smelled and tasted more like sour strawberry juice than wine. Certainly, the alcohol did not come off very hard (and there's definitely credit for that), but I prefer my wine to taste a bit more... like wine.
White - Fortified
1834 Barbeito Madeira Malvazia Portugal, Madeira
98 points
A surprising tinge of green on the nose. Extremely intense, as if you boiled down a 100-year-old madeira (I suppose, in a very strange way, that is what this is). The palate is extremely rich with lots of caramel and rancio notes. Awesome.

Red
1990 Bernard Burgaud Côte-Rôtie France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
90 points
Notes of olives and smoked meat on the nose (as it should be). Classic Northern Rhone. The palate has a lot of funky animal character, and despite the lack of fruit, this comes off as quite juicy.
Red
1984 Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Volcanic Hill USA, California, Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain
85 points
Sharpie on the nose. The attack comes off as quite sweet, but the midpalate falters pretty quickly. Tannins are quite light and this is definitely in a stage of decline.
Red
2000 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Aux Boudots France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
93 points
Completely soaked corked, but this was a good one. Still holding really strong with lots of fruit notes and well-integrated oak. Opulent and slutty, and pretty damn good. Medium-length finish with fading tannins. This is in an excellent spot right now.
