Flight 1 - Whites (3 notes)

2004 Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Brut Millésimé
tasted this alongside a Corton Charlemagne and a Fevre Chablis. The contrast between the three noses was pretty amazing, and I think brought out more of the earthy/herbal nature of the Piper to my nose and palate.
nose: smoky, earthy, herbal notes
palate: again earthy in nature, the fruit had a pleasant brightness that kept the wine balanced. Good stuff, though the Fevre's intensity and precision was tough competition.

2004 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses

I think this was my WOTN, though the Clos de Lambrays and the Richbourg were only a hair's length behind. I have tasted Fevre before (different vineyard, different vintage), and while impressed, it did not leave this kind of impression. This knocked me out. I should be drinking more Chablis of this caliber.
nose: at first on the shy side, with air and over the course of dinner the aromas became deliciously candied: not in the too-much-sugar-for-anyone-to-healthily-metabolize way, but in the super-delicious-I-could-sniff-all-night way.
palate: the intensity of flavor was true throughout the night, but by the end of the evening the underlying film of caramel essence had taken charge of the palate and given the wine presence and impressive weight. The acid was deliciously piercing. Truly outstanding.

2003 Maison Bertrand Ambroise Corton-Charlemagne
I was disappointed in this - I always love CC when I get a chance to taste, but this bottle was somehow lacking. The nose was an inviting mix of oak and fruit, but the mid palate seemed both clunky and off-balance, and then it vanished. The acid appeared to have been somehow removed from the experience. Weird. Not familiar with the producer, so perhaps it is a vintage issue...? I hope it's bottle variation and we just got an off one.

1996 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Domaine Louis Jadot
unfortunately, I did not take good notes on this bottle, as it was overshadowed rather completely by the others I tasted alongside. I recall an aged character, with sweetly browned plum and fine tannin.

2000 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Richebourg

Awesome intensity, with nuanced and supple grace, this was young and lithe. Since someone mentioned it at the table, there was indeed a note of hoisin sauce on the nose which added an asian sort of complexity. The red fruits were pure and at times reserved, but ever-present.

2001 Domaine des Lambrays Clos des Lambrays

Loved it. This changed throughout the night, starting a little wound up, but evolving into a cherry and silk experience. I though the balance was impeccable, and the wine clearly has many years ahead of it (though pretty fabulous tonight). An interesting contrast to the other 2001 on the table, which definitely shouldn't see many more years of storage, this had verve and poise - the perfect combination.

*shoot* lost my notes for this one. Read AAgrawal's, and though I do not think I enjoyed it quite as much as he did, his note is spot-on. Drink now.

2006 Prince Florent de Merode Corton-Bressandes
This was a challenge. I couldn't really get much out of either the nose or the palate, as it seemed too closed to really dig in. I should have tasted it again later in the night to see if it opened up some. The tannin and acid were there, but the fruit seemed hidden, and hard to read. Unrated.
