Introduction

Standard Wine Ark/Langtons tasting - Gavin loves everything. Sigh.

Flight 1 - On entry (1 note)

Fizz...

White - Sparkling
N.V. Jean Milan Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Millénaire France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Lemon, biscuit, slight peach, touches of yeasty ness. In the mouth tart lemon, simple, quaffable, forgettable…

Flight 2 - Some Pinot Grigio (4 notes)

interesting but dull at the same time...

White
2012 Peter Zemmer Pinot Grigio Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, Alto Adige - Südtirol
Melon, slight spice, slight earthiness and a plasticine quality. On the palate there is an initial pear note then spice with a slightly course texture…finishes very savoury tending to bitterness. Nah
White
2012 Albino Armani Alto Adige - Südtirol IO Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, Alto Adige - Südtirol
Melon, spice, peach, slight pear skin. In the mouth pear skin initially but quickly swamped by tight textured, almost spiced, bitterness that carries in the mouth for a long time and finishes with a slight increase in warmth. Hmm.
White
2012 Ronco del Gelso Pinot Grigio Friuli Isonzo Sot Lis Rivis Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Friuli Isonzo
Initially stale fart aromas, then melon and meaty elements then spice. In the mouth the wine has flavours of melon and pear which carry and are joined by front of mouth phenolic grip. The wine has a medium finish which introduces a slight burnt quality. Meh.
White
2011 Vie di Romans Pinot Grigio Dessimis Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Friuli Isonzo
oxidised, struck match - reductive both dominate ripe melon. In the mouth melon, bitter pear skin, spice - the flavours dissipate quite quickly. Nah

Flight 3 - Ocean Eight (3 notes)

not very impressed...middle order producer from Mornington

White
2011 Ocean Eight Pinot Gris Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
smoky, meaty and closed with some very slight melon notes somewhere under this lot. In the mouth the melon is more to the fore with some toasted oak - the wine is sour rather than bitter with contrary cream and oak notes. Not nice at all.
White
2011 Ocean Eight Chardonnay Verve Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
perfumed peach and citrus elements are married to obviously toasted oak, a slight burnt butter quality and touches of nuttiness on the nose. IN the mouth the wine has initial flavours of lemon but then kind of loses it's way, becoming disjointed and ill defined, slight bitter and sour with badly handled oak. Meh
Red
2010 Ocean Eight Pinot Noir Aylward Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
Slightly sour red cherry, earthiness, struck match and meaty notes. On the palate the cherry is a touch unripe as well with some slight mid palate phenolic grip. Slight burnt notes intrude on the finish. Between two stools neither elegant or ethereal nor full bodied and structured.

Flight 4 - Henschke (4 notes)

Hmm

Red
2010 Henschke Keyneton Euphonium Australia, South Australia, Barossa
Plum tending to prune, ripe blackberry, cream, slight cedar notes, toast. In the mouth vanilla, toast, ripe blackberry, slight acidic lick and medium chalky tannin. medium length finish with alcohol warmth that, for me, is a touch to much
Red
2010 Henschke Shiraz Mount Edelstone Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley
Cream, vanilla, slight smoke and toast, muted blackberry and blackcurrant fruit. On the palate, though, the tables are turned with concentrated, cordial syrup weight black fruits - almost to the extent that they are savoury - big, chewy and ripe tannin, massive body and mouth feel. Far too young. Needs years
Red
2010 Henschke Shiraz Vineyard Selection Tappa Pass Australia, South Australia, Barossa
Cream, vanilla, savoury and concentrated blackberry and plum, cedar and spice. In the mouth, blackberry, cream chalky tannin, the wine is slightly savoury. Okay.
Red
2009 Henschke Cyril Henschke Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley
Spirituous, ripe cabernet blackcurrant and cedar, concentrated with spice notes and a touch of mint/herbs. In the mouth the wine is hot, slightly bitter, with blackcurrant fruit lightly pushed aside by grippy tannin. The finish is a little short and the wine is currently out of whack. Hmm.

Closing

pretty average all round...getting tired of these wine tastings...The hard sell is offensive. Probably my bad as I just assume that everyone is as keen as I am...
