Flight 1 (10 notes)

Red
2004 Andrea Oberto Barolo Vigneto Albarella Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Dark crimson with rusty rim; dried rose, dried cherry, cedar, sandalwood, dry and somber; duller flavor, soft, traditional, sweet sandalwood, red licorice on the finish; it's balance reminded me of Cannubi; softer and classic; delicious old-school Barolo.
Red
2010 Domaine Thomas Morey Santenay 1er Cru Grand Clos Rousseau France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Santenay 1er Cru
Purple ruby that's see through with a lighter rim; rose, watermelon, youthful, violet, minerality; good structure, tart, almost candied berry, white rock; very good; lots of nobility and good aging potential; need to get some of this.

Red
2005 Domaine Tortochot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St. Jacques France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Dark rose red almost to rim, good clarity; dark red cherry, fairly closed, copper penny, some green notes, iron, somber, rich and dark; very rich on the palate, tannin, soft acid but muscular tannin; reminded me of a Pommard from the North.

Red
2002 Bernard Dugat-Py Bourgogne France, Burgundy, Bourgogne
Dark core with lots of extraction; dirty and funky at first but it blows off, sour cherry, nice secondary nuance, rotting roses; rich, meaty, violets, rose, sour cherry and pit on the finish, cleansing acid, good nobility, sappy midpalate; people really shocked at the Bourgogne level and the vintage.
Red
1999 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Corton-Clos du Roi France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Dark core, cloudy with bricking; beautiful nose, rusty nail, sour cherry, violets, horse, older but fresh; still sweet fruit, berry, rusty nail, Bretty spritz but doesn't interfere, smoky, plush texture, aged, good density; the group's WOTN though a couple of us called older Côte Rotie.
Red
2011 Hamilton Russell Vineyards Pinot Noir South Africa, Cape South Coast, Walker Bay, Hemel-en-Aarde Valley
Very pale red with lighter rim; lots of charry oak, vanilla, cherry, whipped cream, coffee, modern (especially after aged Burgs); sour cherry, very sweet and new; tasty but tough placement in the lineup after the real Burgs.
Red
2008 Paolo Scavino Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
See through with light rim; sulfur, sweet cherry, very new, rose, a little orange in the back; sweet cherry, lighter body, fresh, dry on the finish, a bit of cedar; Burgundian in style with a soft freshness to it that I was debating a good 2008 Brunello or Nebbiolo.
Red
2009 Gabriel Billard Pommard 1er Cru Les Vaumuriens France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
Light dark dull ruby, see through; vegie note- stems?, floral, slight cherry, raw meat, rhubarb, vanilla; good fat, darker cherry, ripe strawberry, feminine touch but strong tannin; I worked my way through it and figured it out.
White
2005 Domaine Borgeot Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Embrazées France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Golden almost to rim; apple almost cider, wax, oxidizing, sulfur, Sherry-ish; apple, strong mineral, grain, finishing with Sherry; not great.
Red
2010 Emmanuel Darnaud Crozes-Hermitage Les Trois Chênes France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage
Opaque core with thin violet rim; loads of cracked black pepper, violets, dark profile, a little brooding, some vanilla, very sexy; lower acid, smoked meats, plummy, darker berries, fatter but delicious.

Closing

A great evening of mainly Burg and Barolo.
