what can you say about a 100 % grenache blanc? Well, either it's made by some old fool in the south of france who did not go to business school, or by some über-hipster from california. At any rate, this is a seriously intellectual wine that any trendy restaurant would be cool to serve by the glass. Dry, good freshness, quite some body, a little petroleum and potatoe-skin.
White
2012 Two Shepherds Pastoral Blanc Saralee's Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

50 % Roussanne
35 % Marsanne
10 % Viognier
5 % Grenache Blanc
Very fine nose, the viognier addition (which sounds like a very new world thing to add to the mix) perhaps added some complexity but no floral overtones, to my relief. There was a hint of bitter almond marzipan paste - delicious. And quite a body, but also the freshness to go along with it. I thoroughly enjoyed this wine.
Rosé
2013 Two Shepherds Grenache Gris Rosé Gibson Ranch USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino

the best rose I had in California, tasting wines for a week. no sweet fruit, just very refreshing, bone dry and interesting wine. It danced around my palate in a way that somehow made me think of Al Pacino and Gabrielle Anwar doing the tango at the Pierre, in "Scent of a woman". In my world, no higher praise is necessary.
Red

what grip, what personality! light red and almost transparent hue, all red berries in the most complex sense of that descriptor, dry as the mountain ridges in sonoma this year, pure, focused and faultless. I am very happy this was the last wine of my california wine trip. Go get it if you can!

Red
2012 Two Shepherds Mourvèdre USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Bright red fruit, very transparent colour, some spice on the back end, dry and refreshing. simple, but just right the way it is. Beats the living hell out of many french and spanish mourvedre.

Red
2011 Two Shepherds Syrah | Mourvedre USA, California
I would never have guessed the regional origins of this wine in a million years. This wine has the iodine feel of a kumamoto oyster paired with freshly picked August blueberries from above the arctic circle (i.e. not sweet!) and fresh cut meat hanging from a butcher's hook. It is seriously intriguing and I just can't get my head around it. I am guessing this is a failure on my behalf, but all the same, not my WOTD amongst the great lineup at 2shepherds.
