Flight 1 (5 notes)

White - Off-dry
2001 Weingut Max Ferd. Richter Brauneberger Juffer Riesling Spätlese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Fantastic Spätlese, drinking beautifully right now with layers of fresh green apple and citrus fruits tinged with developing lemon cream and smoky notes. There's a lovely floral scent that becomes brighter and sweeter with air, and the whole package is very elegant on the palate with bright acids keeping it very fresh and balancing the moderate sweetness.

A fantastic Riesling, totally seamless, at peak, and really compelling to sit down with and follow over a few hours. There's great complexity here, a fragrance that combines sweet citrus fruits, honeycomb and smoky aromas with higher toned herbal and wintergreen notes (both of us commented that this smelled more like a Ruwer or Saar wine than a middle Mosel), and a palate presence that's incredibly light and airy with all the layers of flavour coming together very elegantly with barely any sense of weight. There's just a faint hint of sweetness here - less than most Kabinett - and plenty of acidity that keeps it impeccably balanced. This is a real winner.
White - Off-dry
2012 Kruger-Rumpf Münsterer Dautenpflänzer Riesling Spätlese Germany, Nahe
90 points
Damn it's hard to stop opening these. Again not the most complex, but really fun to drink now with lots of youthful, primary fruit ranging from sweet orange and apple flavours to riper tropical notes, gentle floral accents, and bright acids beneath keeping it very fresh and lively.
Red
2012 Pierre Gonon Ardèche Les Iles Feray France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Ardèche

Another great showing. An amazing scent from the moment the cork was pulled; lavender, freshly ground pepper, cured meat, and briny olive aromas lead into a palate that's very light on its feet with a remarkable sense of freshness to the bright fruit and other savoury flavours here.

White - Sweet/Dessert
1998 Weingut Josef Leitz Rüdesheimer Klosterberg Riesling Eiswein Germany, Rheingau
95 points
A really clean, pure Eiswein with no trace of botrytis here. Lots of bright, focused fruit flavours ranging from fresh mandarin orange and other citrus flavours to riper tropical fruits, accented by intense honeyed and floral elements. Intensely sweet, yet remarkably light on its feet with powerful acidity keeping it so well balanced and precise, finishing very long. This has a sheer drinkability and elegance to it I don't often find in bigger dessert wines, and it's outstanding. Thanks Count.
