Introduction

We met over this past weekend for our Fall wine club meeting. The theme was pretty simple: Cabernet Sauvignon. We do this meeting almost once a year and it is always a fun meeting. Had some delicious food including pizza, grilled New York Strip, grilled tuna steak, a nice assortment of cheeses that complimented the wines and some interesting deserts from Whole Foods.

Flight 1 (5 notes)

Red
2007 Turnbull Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
87 points
Tasted blind. Off putting aromas of earth, leather, chemical and shoe polish. Upon the first sip it seemed too cold to me. Very high acid, suspect VA. Very hot. Could be flawed. Upon retasting, improved slightly but still hot and out of balance. Could be flawed but not 100% sure. Very disappointed to find out this was the wine I brought. What a let down.
Red
2011 Louis M. Martini Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
Tasted blind. This wine tasted much better. Nice aromas of blackberry, black cherry, earth, flowers and herb. This had a light body for a Cab but did have nice flavors of blackberry, green pepper and cherry. Not super complex but very nice for what it was. This actually was the wine of the night.

Red
2012 Force of Nature Cabernet Sauvignon Mossfire Ranch USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
89 points
Tasted blind. Bigger nose than the first two wines with aromas of game, plum, coffee, blackberry and herb. Very nice and really giving off a lot. The palate featured flavors of mulberry, blackberry, herb and ceder. Ended with a decent finish. Liked the nose a little more than the palate on this. This wine finished 3rd on the night.
Red
2004 Chateau St. Jean Cabernet Sauvignon Cinq Cépages USA, California, Sonoma County
91 points
Tasted blind. Interesting aromas of black currant, cherry, herb and cigar box. Another wine with a very expressive nose. The palate revealed flavors of currant, blackberry, herb and cherry. Ended with a long finish, longer than any of the previous wines. I guessed Sonoma for this one and I was right. This was my wine of the night and finished second in the voting.
Red
2010 The Hess Collection Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder USA, California, Napa Valley, Mt. Veeder
flawed
Tasted blind. A very strange bottle of wine. Upon initial tasting, this was my favorite bottle of the night. Aromas of black cherry, game, herb and mint. This wine was very big in the mouth with flavors of currant, blackberry, dusty berry and mocha on the long finish. I guessed Napa and I was right. Upon tasting this again, BOOM, corked. And not even trying to hide it since it was apparent on both the nose and on the palate.

Closing

A very enjoyable meeting as always.
