Introduction

1998 Tertre Roteboeuf v.s. 1998 Ornellaia

Flight 1 (3 notes)

Red
1998 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Superiore
95 points
Pop and poured. Took about an hour of air in bottle to really open up.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour with slight garnet rim. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with a bouquet of mushroom, truffle, earth, underbrush, and slight orange peel. Developed.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, fine high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of mushroom, sweet earth, tea leaves, blackberry, dark plums. Long finish.
Very good quality. Evident Bordeaux style. Acidity and tannins going strong on this. Balance quite good. More tertiary earth than fruit already though. Drink up over next 3 years, not for further ageing.
60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc.

Pop and poured. Took about an hour of air in bottle to really open up.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of wet earth, coffee, dark chocolate, smoke, tobacco, and sweet blackberries. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of fruity blackberries, black cherries, blackcurrant, earth, tobacco, slight medicinal herbs, and bitter dark chocolate towards the finish. Long finish.
Very good quality. Acidity, tannins, and fruit going strong. This feels like it could last another 5-6 years easily. However, I didn't really like the mouth-feel towards the finish. Not a fan of the slightly medicinal herb and bitterness thing on the finish.
Merlot dominant, with a small percentage of Cabernet Franc.

White - Sweet/Dessert
2008 Montes Gewürztraminer Late Harvest Chile, Curico Valley
89 points
Pop and poured. From 375ml bottle. Drank over 1 hour+.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, gold colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of honey, sweet glue, slight petroleum, white flowers, apricots, and slight lychee with more air. Developed.
On the palate, sweet, good balanced high acidity, medium alcohol, medium body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of apricots, lychees, honey, mild spice. Interesting non-lingering medium- finish for a sweet wine.
The medium body and medium- finish makes this a rather easy-drinking sweet wine that doesn't make you think too hard about it.
Good quality. Label states "Botrytised Grapes" but I didn't get any botrytis character though. Drink up.
