Flight 1 (4 notes)

Red
2007 Clarendon Hills Syrah Liandra Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Clarendon
Dark core, opaque, dull garnet rim; violets, tar, a little raspberry, bitter chocolate, menthol, wild dark berry, smooth texture, vanilla, oak spice; nice texture, velvety, tarry finish, spicy, some grip, some heat on finish; called Clarendon Syrah.
Red
2012 Robert Biale Zinfandel Black Chicken USA, California, Napa Valley, Oak Knoll District
Deep plum to rim, good clarity; fresh berry, sweet, slight jamminess, hint of smoke; good tartness on the palate but lots of sweet fruit, not quite confected but very ripe, blueberry, latent or non existent tannin; seems like valley fruit, I need more structure, thought this was a benchmark Zin but this is much less exciting than Monte Rosso from Martini or Bedrock for similar price.
Red
2012 Château de Saint Cosme Gigondas France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas
Dark purple core with light purple rim; raspberry, slight brick dust, black pepper; nice grippy Grenache, raspberry, tart sweet initially, nice depth, medicinal; very good, this should age well.
Red
2011 Shane Syrah The Villain USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino County
Intensely black with tiny bright violet rim; only partially open on the nose, violets, plum, dark berry, tar; fairly soft; very drinkable but not expressive at this stage; check back in 3+ years.
